Hi guys,
Just thought I'd share my experience.

I do a lot of training; circuits, lifting, endurance, and plyometrics/HIIT, fitting in learning to be a PT.

I went to a Yoga class last night, now, I'm a fella of 23, and everyone was at least twice my age and the fairer sex. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Some of the stretches and positions really tested my flexibility, balance and concentration, which was a pleasant suprise. We also did some meditation and concentration work (I've done some meditation and hypnosis before, so the idea wasn't completely alien) and I have to say the whole experience was very therapeutic.

It also, believe it or not, relieved some of the tension in my shoulder (chronic tendonitis which refuses to shift) and eased some discomfort in my knees (cartilidge damage from contact sports and squash).

I left feeling satisifed, relaxed and loose, and decided to sign up for the rest of the term.

Highly recommended to everyone, be you body builder or endurance athelete, as not only was it theraputic, but most enjoyable :)

Anyone do yoga, anything to share/suggest?

Real men squat to relax. nuff said

Whilst I found this most entertaining, I a) care about my body and fitness enough to know the a broad range of stimuli, including balance and stretching, will benefit me far more than resistance excersise alone, and b) am aware that 'real men' also; don't dance, wipe their bums with sandpaper, and don't get laid an awful lot :)

Head to the gym, g/f goes to yoga/pilates or whatever the craze is and I go lift
Having said that, hot women bending and stretching would not be the worst thing to be stuck doing for an hour :p

The football weight room is opposite the gymnastics workout room and all that seperates us is two big pieces of glass.

Needless to say everyone turns up early on a wednesday wearing sleeveless tops and fights over the benches by the window :p

I used to do Yoga many years ago for about 6 months and I used to feel fantastic after a class.

I know it's only jest and banter. But I'm a little bit shocked at how closed-minded some people are. I'm well aware that the vast majority of the 'men just lift' crowd are driven primarily by vanity, but surely something that benefits body and mind is at least slightly of interest?

If it's only for the fact that better flexibility in your quads, hams and calfs will allow a deeper squat :p

Stretching is an integral part of bodybuilding, as Wardie is just learning ;]

After trying the wii fit yoga (and not being to bad for a bat fasterd) i am very tempted to join a beginners class :]

Never tried Yoga myself, but I certainly do always have a good stretching routine. If we are dishing our dirty little secrets I will admit the reason I have always had a good stretching routine is that I was a gymnast in my youth, a sport that I took a lot of stick for for many years for its "girliness" haha.

On the plus side I think it's very much responsible for the fact that I have carried a reasonable frame on me +/- lard over the years, which is again starting to show through now I've shifted 3 stone this year. The years of 20 hours/week training did have an affect, although hell no will I ever get back to spending 20 hours a week training.

You should be able to pop down to a class and give it a go for a small fee before signing up for the term. Never know, this time next year, you could be a leotard sporting flexi-miracle :p

As far as stretching and flexibility are concerned. When I was more bodybuilding oriented, I used to stretch dynamically before and statically after training. For me at least, it maintained flexibility and prevented stiffness as opposed to actually improving range of motion.

I'm not into bodybuilding in the same way these days; whilst I love resistance training, I enjoy a range of different stuff to keep me fit, and more importantly, entertained :)

I've done yoga for several months now, I was suffering with my back several times a week and some days could'nt do anything due to the pain. Now I have no problems what so ever all down to yoga....

Most football clubs use it for there players

Wow, that's rare. Seems to me that all gym-run classes are free, of course, but anything where the venue is rented comes with a fee. I don't do yoga at my gym anyhoo :) Spend enough time there as it is!
