8800GT running very hot

My graphics card has always been loud, but recently it has got ridiculous. The card is an OcUK 8800Gt, bought from here about 6 months ago. Besides when idle (or just out of games) the fan is very, very loud and irritating. Nvidia MonitorView reports that the card is also constantly well over 90 degrees C while playing EVE.

Is this normal? What can I do to fix it?

Taking the card out and checking for dust etc might do the trick

Use rivatuner to log your fan speed and temps and let is know what they both are at idle and when gaming.

8800GT's get hot. When I had mine it would hit 80's but I did have it overclocked but I had only manually set the fan to go to 70% max. Anything above that is annoying.

If your card is so hot at even idle and hence your fan is running faster than it should then something wrong.

How's the airflow in the case?

Have you checked the fan for dust?

Okay, it has got a lot hotter in the last 6 months but maybe not that much.

Your only choice might be to fit an after market cooler.

I set my two 8800GT's to 100% 100% of the time, the PC is that noisy it doesn't matter anyway lol...

However, yeah sounds like they're clogged?

Rivatuner is a royal PITA to configure the fan speeds to ramp up with temperature but that Guru3D article is well written and easy to follow.

Ideally you should fit an Arctic Accelero S1, have no fans at all AND watch your temps drop by 20-30C across the board.

After fitting my 8800gt and running 3D mark 06 the card temps went off the scale. Taking the time to set up fan profiles in rivatuner (under 55deg 40% speed, 55-60deg 75% speed and over 60deg 100% speed) card temp rarely goes over 65 deg even under hard gaming. Must agree though that the fan is very noisy at high speeds.
