4870 and 4850 info

Anyone actually know when the ATi NDA is up?

Is it still the 16th?

You never know. If Nvidia is now launching early on the 16th, they might bring it forward a day if their cards are really that good to stop people rushing out and buying the GTX280.

.. because CRYSIS is THE graphics benchmark, and I'm sure there's a lot of people out there who love the game, OTHERWISE IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A NO.1 BEST SELLER WOULD IT?

Crysis was not a number one best seller. Maybe for a week at launch, it didnt do anywhere like what they where hoping and it was ripped appart by reviews and tech sites alike for being badly flawed, both in the game it's self and the technical issues that plauged everyone who ran it, even at the time dual 8800 Ultra machines (and still now).

Profits and targets aside, Nvidia and ATi look at the games that are on the market and see how well there doing in them. Crysis represents so little a share of the market, to what point and purpose would be served in spending a fortune on a mega card to appease people who play a game that knowone plays (proportionatly)? It's only uninformed all be it well intentioned gamers who take Crysis (and to quote a guy from this thread) as the be all and end all of games. It isnt. Not even slightly.

Be like Jeremy Clarkson reviewing a new ferrari and slating it cause it cant tow a 5 ton solid slab of concrete, it's nonsense.

There new cards, and even there old ones, are running the vast majority of the games libary at very smooth resolutions with a lot of the filters turned on. If we where in the situation Nvidia and ATi where making cards that ran everyting at literally a million frames a second, we would be accusing the games developers of being lazy. Cant win.

With regards to price of the ATi cards. I think we can still hold on to £199 for the 4870 imo. ATi said from the very begining they where going for 'super aggressive'' pricing, in order to tempt gamers away from Nvida. If we where in a situation ATi had a similar market share (or better) than Nvidia we could expect price gouging. But this card(s) is supposed to regain the presitige of the company and put them back out in contention. Profit plays a big part in it, but if anything, these new parts are out to regain some of the prestiege of ATi which not to get too philisophical about is arguably more important.

It boils down to the fact that the devs simply cannot be bothered to optimize their code. This is why the console industry is booming and the consoles lifespan is a lot longer than PC's (in terms on pure gaming). I too think 40% is pathetic. I wouldn’t moan if graphics cards were cheaper, a lot cheaper too.

The reason people keep referring to 'Crysis' is because it’s the most demanding game there is and people like to think that if they are investing in new technology to play a 6 month old card then it should be able to play it on full.

I don't want anyone saying a 40% increase is good, it isn't. The prices they charge, especially Nvidia, is nothing short of disgusting. The only reason ATI are cheaper is because they can't keep up with Nvidia. I can personally guarantee that if their cards were on top then they too would charge the ludicrous prices we see. I paid £400 for an X850XT PE and that was when ATI were on top.

Far Cry 2 is out before the end of the year so we'll have to wait another year to play that too. Nvidia can produce a card that will play 'Crysis' at full but what's the point when they can keep drip feeding us?

The performance of the 4850 and 4870 or the fact that Nvidia is lauching a day early and dropping prices?

The slides. The dropping prices thing seems to be mentioned by several sources though. Whether they source each other, is crucial to whether its true.

The early day thing was sent out to reviewers (NDA earlier) and so is likely to be true.

And also, possibly, why the U3 engine is so good.

Didn't we have a same situation with obivlion when the 7/1800 were out.

Yup, and Morrowind destroyed GF3/GF4.

I don't know why people get caught up on Crysis so much, I installed it yesterday and it runs lovely on my HD3850 at 1680x1050 with most details on high and the most important ones on very high, no AA ofcourse, but thats no biggy. It'll probably start to crawl towards the end like it did on my 8800GT but it gets boring then anyway.

People are bitter. It won't run at the absolute highest settings on some hardware that they spent all their pocket money on so they resent it.
