Hehe, Just phoned in sick!

I've been at my new job 6 months and not called in sick, in fact i've only ever called in sick for 3 days ever and they were genuine. Not hung over, not headaches, but physically bed ridden ill. I think someone said that if you are well enough to get out of bed, you are well enough to go to work. If it was your own business i bet you'll get your ass to work, people who tends to take sick days generally don't really care for their jobs or like it.

What I have seen lately thou is people take sick days a few days before or after their planned holiday leave so that they have that extra few days off. Right now there is a girl in the office that went around on Tuesday telling everyone she is started to come under a cold, actually played the same "presentation" on Tuesday, even dumped a case file on my desk on Tuesday to ask me to take care of it should she not turn up the next day and as you can guess she never came in on Wednesday and hasn't been in on Thursday and I very much doubt she will come in today either, plus she has next week off, so that's 12 days off straight from 5 days leave, not bad eh?

I can't call in sick til September this year unless I want disciplinary action. I've pulled myself into work in all sorts of states. :(

I've called in sick a handful of times in my life, all genuine. I just think it's out of order otherwise, especially if you get sick pay.

Been a student for a couple of months now (for the first time in a few years) and get almost every Friday off, I am loving 3 day weekends after years of 10 hour shifts!

Anyone else do it today lol?

This is the first sick day in a good year or so I've had.

I actually needed the day off so I could do my driving lession but forgot to book it off =/

I felt pretty bad lieing through my teeth, I'm glad its over now:D

David,

I'd like to see you in my office on Monday Morning. Please consider carefully what you want to tell me.

The Boss

Erm... wut?

I've had 3 instances of sick in the last, so if I'm sick again that's 4, and disciplinary action, written warning most likely.

At the start of september I'll have only been ill once in the past year, and therefore allowed to be ill again.

Have you not heard that some jobs place strict limits on sickness leave? The DWP for example.

I used to work for the DWP (It's Department for Work and Pensions actually :p) and I can't say I ever heard of anyone having a warning for being sick, infact I used to work in HR and the sheer number of people who were on stupid amounts of paid sick leave in the DWP was astounding.

Thats ridiculous if you ask me, being sick is something you can't help, just nature.

If that was policy here i'd just turn up and projectile vomit on my boss, then say 'Sorry, couldn't help it, couldn't stay at home in bed because i've been off 3 times already'

Stupid rules.

I have a friend in the DWP who has been warned about it. I agree that the sickness culture not only in the DWP but in Britain is ridiculous. But then when you give paid sick leave, you just invite abuse.

Unlucky! Like I say never heard of it in our place, must have been lax :D

Paid sick leave is OK to an extent, but there were people blatantly milking it.

For example there were people who'd come into a job, and then 3months after starting go on extended sick leave for 'stress' for a year at a time and be paid for it... :| I mean seriously... they are being paid to not do the job they were hired for because they can't handle doing it...

JUST FIRE THEM!

But of course stupid employment law won't let you...

AFAIK other countries like Canada don't tend to offer paid sick leave - I think I remember hearing that somewhere. You have to wonder how much lower our taxes could be, if public sector employees weren't given paid sick leave - not to mention being able to retire at 60 with a gilt-edged index-linked pension, when the rest of us have to retire at up to 68, but that's another story.

Anyway, sorry to people who think it sounds boring or stuffy, but I don't find it funny when people 'pull a sicky' because that is part of the reason Britain isn't as productive as it should be, which hurts all of us.

Nothing wrong with having sick days if your fed up and tired once in a while. Can do you a lot of good having the day to chill out better than hanging around at work clock watching. Life is way to hectic, a lot of people I know work 6 sometimes seven days a week and are all ways ill or tired. Pulling a sicky goes a little way at evening things up a small amount.
