MSI P35 Neo2-FR needs active NB cooling?

Last night I installed my new E7200 and MSI P35 Neo2-FR mobo and I went straigt to overclocking, I increased the Northbidge voltage to 1.45V and it ran stable but when I touch the northbridge heatsink I burn my finger.

I use watercooling with an external mounted radiator so there is zero airflow around the socket.

Are the P35 chipsets known to run hot but still run stable or should I look at a way to point a quiet 80mm fan towards the NB to cool it? (which will be difficult due to the watercooling tubing around the socket)

I have the same problem my Q6600 is stuck at 3GHz as the northbridge starts to rocket in temp if i pump up the voltage, I am using a stock voltage at the moment for the northbridge and getting temps such as 51oC under load and this the plumits to 30-39oC at idle i have 6 120mm fans in my case (Coolmaster CM-690) in a 3 in 3 out pattern and still get these high temps with a high air flow.

BTW CPU cooler is a freezer 7 pro so theres some air flow around NB heatsink from that as well

so your not alone.

Yeah with low airflow and NB volts of ~1.45V upwards it's going to get a little toasty. If I recall correctly, the Neo2 Fr's heatpipe cooling has a notch in the middle for you to mount at 15mm thick fan. Might be worth a shot?

isn't the notch there because that crazy loop the loop cooler of the platinum would have passed though it

(If you peel back the red P35 neo2 FR sticker on the board p35 platinum is printed on it)

No more 25mm or 40mm fans for me, thinking back to my DFI NF4 mobo with a 7000rpm NB fan gives me nightmares :o :p

I was having another think about this and there is room between the CPU socket and videocard for a 80mm fan and I can make (bodge) a bracket from the top mobo slot mounting to a fan.

What is strange though (or great) is that the system remained stable with a scorching hot NB

Yeah it is a debadged Platinum. You're probably right about the circupipe but I would've thought you might just be able to cram a fan vertically in between? Maybe for one of those thinner AMD 70mm fans they have on the reference coolers. (15mm thick)

Possibly but I think the NB would be better cooled by a fan blowing straight on the heatsink rather than just a small edge to the side.
