Q6600 fan temp?!?

Hi,

Just bought a new setup with a new Quad Q6600 and 8gb ram (ocz 800mhz)

The worry i have is at idel ther temp is between 48 and 57 degrees and when at full load creeps up into the early 80's. Its at stock speed with the stock fan (but with arctic cooling paste)

Its running on a Abit Fatality F-I90HD Mini ATX board

Is this right??

Also i have tried to overclock it to 3ghz by upping the clock speed from 266 to 334 but it isnt stable and goes to the blue screen.

Is it just because the intel fan is crap? , if so what do you recommend?

all depends what revision the quad you have is i have a quad 6600 but a B revision and they are the hottest quads by far, if you have bought it recently im guessing you will have a GO revision which generate less heat and run a lot cooler than the first quads released. your idle temps are about average using the intel stock cooler but load temps in the 80s are pushing it, try taking your side case cover off and see what your temps are like then also have you got a 120mm case fan at the back of case and anywhere else in your case.
i would ditch the intel stock cooler and purchase a better heatsink
The artic freezer pro 7 is a decent cooler which is a very reasonable price too. but there are much better coolers on the market have a search on the overclocking and cooling section you will find many threads on what good Q6600 coolers there are

i would not try and overclock whatsoever untill the load temps are not in the 80s as your temps will be even worse else.

+1 for the arctic freezer 7, cheap but effective. currently using one to cool a 3ghz q6600, load temps of, 46,47,50,51 when running prime95.

I will go and buy one 2moro. What paste should i use?

Also, my case is an akasa one off ocuk , the cheapest one (black one). Its in a computee desk at the bottom with only a space of about 2" either side. Could that be what is contributing to the heat?

the arctic freezer comes with paste preapplied which is pretty good, or if you wanted you could use arctic silver 5. how many and what size of fans are in your case, minimum is one front intake and one rear outtake, and make sure that the airflow is unobstructed through the case.

There is 2 fans , 1 at the back and 1 at the front. Im thinking it might be that i only put a pea size amount of paste on the cpu.

Would applying more do the trick or is a pea size the right amount?

Sounds like too much already! I always worked on a rice grain size, not pea!

Two trains of thought and probably not much in it. With a quad you do a thin line across the cores. Search this forum and you will find pics

2nd way is to put a small amount on and then with a peice of clingfilm over your finger, spread it around until you have a very thin layer which you can almost see through.

Too much TIM is as bad as too little.
 
could some1 post up a link to this thread with pics of how to apply thermal paste? cuz i disagree, yea thin layer but spread evenly all over from center outwards! works fine for me!

Right... Ive got the Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro and also got some cable ties to tidy up all the cables.

I have the Akasa Zen black case off ocuk.

It has a side vent with a pipe going right down to the processor. The freezer 7 pro sits facing the front of the case instead of facin g up so is it worth taking this off?

this is a shot of my own case with the freezer 7 installed the correct way. so if you have it like this your ok. regarding the vent on the side panel, i would remove it. also youd be able to fit another intake fan in its place.

I never used the stock cooler with the quad. i used to run an e6600 @3.6ghz under the freezer, load temps testing with orthos never went over 59'c (tested over 14hours) my idle temps were about 30-33. replaced the e6600 with the quad about a month ago and when i had it @3.0ghz load temps were 45,46,48,51. currently back @stock settings and theyre 27,26,28,30 at idle. not doing any ocing as my motherboard or psu is playing up a bit.
 
im no expert:D but i think it may be to do with the surface of the cpu and/or the base of the heatsink not being totally flat, then again could just be that that particular core is in use more.
 
Well, just tried to fit the arctic cooler freezer 7 pro and it wont fit on my MB as the graphics cooler is in the way. So....

Ive tidied all the cables up and redone the original cooler (new line of paste as it should have been done in the first place).

Its now idling at mid 30's instead of before which was 50ish.

Full load temp was 46/46/46/48 which i think is a MASSIVE improvement of the previous load temp of early 80's!!

Anybody know what cooler will fit on my motherboard (abit F-I90HD Micro ATX) that will be as good or better than the freezer 7 for similar money?
