Took my GTS out this afternoon and packed that away job done. Went to fetch my backup card (X550) and put that in. Put machine away and switched it on....

No boot. Machine gives out error beep for no video card..

Took out backup card and noticed a green like powder coating on some of the PCI-E pins. Also pointed a torch down into the PCI-E slot and there is a white powder coating on some of the pins. So I guess my board is now completely ******. Didn't want to put the GTS back in incase it ****** that aswell..

Anyone ever had anything like this?, bit ****** off to say the least.

The green is corrosion on the copper pins.

The white powder, could be from water in the PCIe socket too.
Do you have watercooling ?

I don't no.

I can only presume the pins were corroded before I put it in, I didn't noticed and then it's killed the PCI-E slot?

Not my day today :p

Sounds like some sort of condensation in the PC doesn't it, with green on copper... maybe they were stored crap when you bought them, and this was already in the slot?

Cheers Pug

backup and motherboard have been used for years. Unsure why it's happened really. Backup card has been stored in its box in my room..

Exposed copper will tarnish. The green powder is just scraping the surface as you insert. Just use a bit of emery paper or metal cleaner making sure you remove all traces before inserted (or even wire wool :)). In may take several inserts into the slot to remove the coating you scrapped onto the slot connectors.

I believe some very well diluted vinegar might get rid of it. Before you try anything like that though try just some dry scrubbing with something not too abrasive. A cotton bud might work.

Just been to about the only place open at this time and bought the cheapest PCI-E card they had will see if machine will boot up with the new card soon :)

It's called verdigris. I would be very careful how you remove it from the card though. Don't use any abrasive as you will probably take off the thin copper. Sometimes it will just rub off. If it does'nt come off then you could try to gently apply some facial scrub (the stuff with the bits in it, or similar) with a toothbrush. It should gently take it off.

Handy little tool that lasts forever is a pcb polishing block, non metallic abrasive in rubber (Polifix £2). Use it to clean off corrosion from copper traces before soldering, or remove excess flux after.

Loadsamoney said that to me on MSN as well. Bloody chuffed the board is OK can now forget about it and look forward to the new cards.

This 7200GS is bloody horrid

lol :D

That's what I had to buy while I RMA my 8800GT.

About as good as a chcocolate fireguard. It falls over on 1680x1050 just displaying the desktop. Horrible fuzzy text.

Come on RMA!!!!!!
