Green powder coating on some PCI-E pins

It's on loan from a certain pc store. I'll be taking it back under the return policy and buying a proper backup but this will do for the weekend just to browse the web :p

P.S

I got the 7200 OC to 650/925 barely makes any sort of difference :D

:D

lol, let me guess, that certain store recommended it as a gaming graphics card ? they do to me all the time... for like £40 too !

Did they hell as like. I bought the card because it was an emergency and I needed my rig running tonight :p

No intention of gaming with it (I've tired, I wanted to pull out my eyeballs, go figure)

I remember trying to get FEAR to work on my gfs 6200LE, 3Ghz P4. That was pretty horrible. 800x600 everything low was just about playable. Looked like I was playing Doom2 again though :p

I just installed Ntune and ran the test on mine. lmfao is all I can say. :D

I dare not overclock it just in case I fall over with shock getting an extra 0.000001 FPS.

Took my GTS out this afternoon and packed that away job done. Went to fetch my backup card (X550) and put that in. Put machine away and switched it on....

No boot. Machine gives out error beep for no video card..

Took out backup card and noticed a green like powder coating on some of the PCI-E pins. Also pointed a torch down into the PCI-E slot and there is a white powder coating on some of the pins. So I guess my board is now completely ****ed. Didn't want to put the GTS back in incase it ****ed that aswell..

Anyone ever had anything like this?, bit ****ed off to say the least.

Just seen Your Post, To get that kind of corrosion would require as mentioned a damp or Corrosive atmosphere..You say it's not water so the only other thing I can think is You may have used a Silicon type sealant in or around the case ? The fumes while curing will distroy copper and electronics big time.

The very strange part to Me is You put a new card in without Looking/checking it's pins..This means You now can not say for sure if it was the new card or the old card and Mobo that had the problem !

electrical contact cleaner sprayed on to a cloth might work

i use this to clean up connections on my guitar inputs which can get rusty and give a bad signal over time

You must have read it wrong. I have not used any sort of sealent. The old card had the corrosion on and when I put it in.

When I took the old card out and put the new one in it worked just fine. The problem lied with the old card which I have now binned.

Ok, Must have happened while it was stored, but Your right I am a bit confused as You mention Green and white powder...Anyway as long as the expensive card is Ok.
White powder looking stuff can come from old plastic or prematurely aged (run too hot for to long) or the GRP/epoxy board the GFX card is made of

Like I say Always worth double checking contacts on anything before You plug it in ;)

i find that kitchen towel folded over the edge of a credit card works wonders for cleaning out PCI, AGP and RAM slots :)

i used a pallet knife and kitchen roll when I inadvertently filled my pci-e slot with acid green feser one once.

its suprising how much you can get in there!
