I know this is a really difficult question to answer but can someone give me a rough idea as to how many db's a cheap yamaha acoustic guitar is likely to generate, like in terms of the loudest it could possibly achieve.

You need an SPL meter to find out for sure, and to get the loudest sound it can possibly make you'll have to smash it into a wall or the floor, rock'n'roll styleé. :D

Okay. I took my Washburn dreadnought acoustic and strummed it with a pick for some chord progressions with a sound level meter about two feet away on the same level as the guitar to get maximum readings. The highest decibel level I could attain was 83 dB with just normal strumming, and this was directly in line with the front of the guitar. This level is about the same as a conversation with a friend; you are in no danger of adversely affecting your hearing. If you're still concerned, a good music store sells ear plugs that reduce all input by about 10 dB, thus eliminating any concerns you might have.

Wow, some people would have a problem with the volume of an acoustic?

Mind you I was at a meeting the other day in Wolverhampton and there was a crane outside making a slight noise.
The woman opposite me was really suffering from the 'deafening' sound and had to go out.

You know if you're damaging your hearing... you can't hear properly for more than 30 minutes and have a ringing in your ear.
