Ive just returned from Uni to find my old man talking about changing car with a budget of £21K~.

Insurance will not be an issue for him and he is upgrading from a VW Golf TDI (not the latest model), the 130 bhp version, albeit his has 150 I believe.

He has been eyeing BMW M3's apparently but it would be good to hear other suggestions.

One thing, it should be reliable, he is 60+ and is developing Victor Meldrew syndrome rapidly, much to everyone's amusement, and his Golf has been flawless.

Its quite a shock considering the whole fuel prices thing and my old mans sensibility, but it seems its been nuked in favour of having something faster before its too late. ;) :p

Does he have any idea about running costs and how it will be massively more expensive to then a Golf TDI? What does he do mileage wise? And what will the car be for, just day to day running of a pensioner?

My typical crazy buy a TVR post is not valid in this case due to the reliablility concern :(

The son-in-law has one so I cant see him wanting one, but you never know.

Aye, I think the whole reason he wants one is that his mate is selling one, so he has spoken to him quite a bit, but its got the wrong leather colour.. he is heavily involved in motorsport and engineering so should have some idea. The car will be mainly for getting him to/from work every day (10 miles each way~). Then all their other journeys, such as to the new families house and just for some fun.

If you want an M3, there is no alternative and you should buy an M3. Especially if you are old and have enough money that if it breaks it doesnt matter.

How about a Mercedes 350 SL sport Convertible

You wont get one of those for £21k, at all. For a start they didn't come out until at least a year after the SL500 in that shape, which you also cannot buy for £21k in good condition.
Just noticed :o.............how much does a 2003 Merceds 350 SL sport Convertible normally go for ???

Great, an ebay auction with a reserve not met for a car with a trade book price of £24k, private value of £25-£26k and dealer price of £27-28k.

Very useful, thanks :D

And the owner is a tool, why has he stuck V8 Kompressor on the wing of a car fitred with a normall aspirated V6?

What sort of pitfalls is he looking at?
