A Guide to OcUK Console IRC Chat Rooms
What is the OcUK Console IRC Chat Room?
Here in the consoles section of OcUK Forums we currently have set up two channels on the Quakenet IRC Network which are named #ocuk-consoles and #ocuk-ps3 – A place where OcUK Forum members can chat in real-time about their favourite console or games. – This guide will explain how to get set-up and connected to IRC, no matter what platform you use, Windows, Linux or Mac OS.
The Channels
#ocuk-consoles
The general 'Consoles' channel for talk about your favourite console and games. This channel is owned by Apopcalyptic, and the Operators of the channel are shaun_, kemik, streeteh and rp2000.
#ocuk-ps3
This channel is specifically aimed at PlayStation 3 owners to talk about the PlayStation 3, games and to organise online games, this channel is owned by Inoshishi, the operators are the original people who helped set up the channel, Inazuma, msmalls74, needles, Tombo and Stanners.
At some point some other channels may be set up by other users for other consoles.
How to join in the fun?
To join an IRC channel you will need to install a client, below are some recommended clients for your operating system, try them out and decide which is best for you:

xChat - http://www.xchat.org/
Mac OS X
Colloquy - http://colloquy.info/
Snak - http://www.snak.com/
X-Chat Aqua - http://xchataqua.sourceforge.net/
Ircle - http://www.ircle.com/

xChat - http://www.xchat.org/
Once you have your selected client installed we can set-up and connect to Quakenet.
Set-Up and Connect
Each IRC client will have slightly different options but when you first install your chosen client you should be asked some basic info
Chat Server: uk.quakenet.org
Server Port: 6667
Nickname: What you want to be called in the chat room.
Alt-Nickname: This is an alternative nickname if the one specified above is taken it will use this one.
Email Address: Your own email address.
Once you have entered your info you should simply need to press Connect (may be slightly different on your client)
You should now be connected to Quakenet IRC Network
Joining the chat channels
Once connected to the Quakenet Server you will need to join the specific rooms you want to, to do this type /j #ocuk-consoles or /j #ocuk-ps3 depending on the channel you want to join, you can join multiple channels if you wish.
Most clients allow you to set up specified channels to auto-join once your connected to a server, check the manual of your client for further info.
You are now free to chat away!
The Next Level!
This is just the basics of IRC, there is so much more to learn and over time you will, the next step is to create an account with Q.
You can register a Q account with your nickname to reserve it for your use, the account is named after your current nick. But after that, it doesn't matter what nick you use. Basically, you can't create a Q account with name XYZ unless your nick is XYZ when you create it.
To register with Q type the following:
Usage: /msg Q HELLO [email protected] [email protected]
You need to specify your email address TWICE (to prevent typing mistakes). A link where you can obtain your password will then be sent to the email address specified. You must read and re-enter a code before you will be given your password. You can then AUTH to Q.
To AUTH to Q type the following:
/auth username password
For example:. /auth John 1234john
