Passengers drinking alcohol in a car

lol @ people thinking you can't carry people who are drunk...

Funniest thing I have seen was a man bombing along in a 30mph zone in his modified escort, shirtless, with a cap on and drinking a bottle of stella!

No of course it isn't illegal, you always see those drunken people taken into a taxi or something on TV to be taken back home.
But there could be an argument about the people drinking may cause a 'distraction'.

as has been said about 4 times, i wasn't asking about taking drunk people but people who are actually DRINKING in the car. IE. beer to mouth whilst vehicle is in transit.

I cant see that being illegal, or you wouldn't be allowed to consume normal beverages, it would be too difficult to police/monitor/enforce.

It is perfectly legal for passengers to drink alcohol in a private car at any time.

It is illegal for passengers to take alcohol on to, or drink alcohol on any vehicle with 8 or more seats or a train travelling to a football match though.

Is it though? you can buy alcohol on any train..

I also said that there is an argument that if people are DRINKING it could be classed as a distraction or something...

Does it really matter? At the end of the day, people don't drink in my car, which is a good thing (in my view), so that's what matters.

No, it doesn't really matter but if it was me I'd rather not have a mate look up the rules regarding drinking in cars because I told him it was illegal. I'd just rather be straight with them, that's all. But as you say, it's no matter.

Yes, the relevant legislation is in the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985. It's almost impossible to enforce on normal trains, but I was left stranded at Selhurst Park one year because our coach driver was arrested because the Police found alcohol on the coach when they searched it during the game.

Well until now I assumed it was illegal, which I think as snowdog said, is due to it being mentioned in a film, and me and my mates just adopted it. :/ If someone turned round and said "It's not illegal, so I am going to drink in your car." then I'd just tell them that it's fine if it's not illegal to drink in a car, but in my car it's not allowed. :)

From now on though it'll just be "No drinking/open alcohol in my car." :)

It's perfectly legal. You don't have to be sober to be a passenger, wtf is wrong with you lot? You can be as ****** as you want in a car, as long as you don't have the keys.

i was always told you couldnt drink in the front of the car. dont know why

your passangers can drink no problems. I used to live in Illinois and you can't even have an unopended drink in the cab it has to be in the trunk (which is a boot). Because this is the law in most states in the US people seem to think it applies here.

I have drank loads in the back of mini cabs...

What's the big issue with passengers having a drink in your car anyway?

Smoking I can understand because it stinks and takes ages to get rid of, and I guess if they are so drunk they're throwing it all over the place it's understandable that you would want to prevent it but I can't see what problem a passenger having a couple of beers on your way somewhere is going to cause. Me and my friends drink in each others cars all the time.

Used to love getting hammered in my mate's Nova SR, we'd go spinning from around 7pm right through to 3-4am. We'd take it in turns to be the designated driver on a rota system every week.
