All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

That's a good point. There isn't exactly a shortage of top CM's in the league, there are even a lot of top English CM's with Gerrard, Lampard, Carrick, Hargreaves and then the lesser ones like Jenas and Huddlestone (and others I'm sure).

£18m is very expensive for someone of Barry's age when you compare other signings. Villa are holding Liverpool to ransom and personally I can't understand why Liverpool are still chasing it.

I cant really understand either, I guess we're going to lose Masch for a while next season, and alonso is to be offloaded too, and it keeps stevie settled.
Obviously Barry is better than Lucas, but if we'd just kept Alonso theres no doubt Lucas would be filling his boots proply by the time he really was past it.

What makes it more funny is they are selling off a far superior player in Alonso for less money and bringing in Barry.

Alonso was superior in his day, hes been a shadow of his former self though.

Alonso hasnt been good, let alone superior, for quite some time, we're better off getting rid of him whilst we can still get £14m+ for him and Barry is a fantastic replacement. However, considering he has now come out and said he wants to leave Villa to join Liverpool we shouldnt be paying over the odds for him.

I'm looking forward to signing Villa though! ;)

You want him to leave? I'm think someone has spiked your milk old man ;)

Don't get me wrong, he's a great player when he wants to be but that's not very often recently plus his attitude stinks and you know that if he were to stay he'd be complaining within about 2 months that he wished he'd left.
If we can get £15m-£20m for him I'd take it happily:)

I didn't realise Deco was as old as he is so hopefully the reports that we won't be signing him because of his age are true.

Chelsea could do well out of Drogba leaving imo. Their system is so focused to suit his style up top (Which he does better than anyone) that when he's either not there or just not playing well, it hurts the side as an overall attacking unit.

Bring in 1 or 2 top quality strikers and Drogba going could easily be a good thing.

Problem is that there are not that many top quality strikers for sale or avaiable, and then how many of the few that are want to join chelsea?

Scolari might choose to focus more on the midfield and just stick someone useless upfront purely as another body, like he does with Nuno Gomes for Portugal.

Fortunately Shevchenko fits this bill quite nicely.

If we can get rid of Drogba, Anelka and Shevchenko then we'd only need 2 good replacements as I hope to see the likes of Sahar, Sinclair and Di Santo getting a few chances this season:)

If Barry is worth £18m in today's market - imagine how much Carrick and Hargreaves are worth :) (not that either are for sale mind you, just recalling how many people thought they werent worth the same money)

Both of them are a comparative bargain compared to Barry at the same price (but I cant see Liverpool getting much change out of £20m if they continue to fight for him)

Captain of a top ten EPL team, British (and capped recently) all adds to the price, would still chose Alonso over him though majority of the time

I think there will be an almighty striker merry-go-round this summer (not incl Torres) with Drogba, Santa Cruz, Berba, Villa and a number of others all swapping to big clubs

Bentley has said he wants to leave Blackburn for champions league football. Can only see Liverpool being a possible destination for him, doubt Chelsea will be interested and I can't imagine us fancying him either. Arsenal obviously won't sign him.

If its for the rumoured £8.5m mentioned earlier then great, as we certainly need wide players (and english players), but I wouldnt be too happy about paying over £10m for him.

Personally if I was Benitez, I would put him right at the top of our transfer list. For years we have whined and made excuses about a lack of goal scorers, well here is one. One with a proven partnership with our main striker.

Every so often there comes a footballer that you really dont want to be playing against, you want them playing for you. Villa is one such footballer in my opinion.

He prefers the famous number 7 shirt, once worn by Keegan and Dalglish...Villa next?

Sadly, I think I am only dreaming. I dont think its a price matter, as I think we can easily raise the funds for a Villa bid. (hell if I had my way I would stop this talk of 20million for Barry, and change it to 20million for Villa). As I say though, I dont think its a money issue, I think its a choice issue..and for some reason I just dont think that Benitez is interested in signing Villa.

I think there will be a bidding war for Villa if he carries on scoring, which will end up ruling Liverpool out, presuming they sign Barry.

i agree too. Id rather see our barry funds going on villa. Still sell alonso and blood Lucas more. Plessis has proved he can handle the league too, obviously he isnt ready for the BIG games but thats fine.

Liverpool have enough goals in them already so I reckon Barry will be the priority over Villa (there's a joke there) especially as their midfield is easily the weakest out of the top 4:)

I'm all for using Plessis next season, the responsability will only help him develop. Sometimes its better to put youngsters straight in, like Lucas. From what we've seen of Plessis so far, I think he could thrive from a regular spot in our squad.

I'll join the "drop Barry for Villa" shout... although we do badly need a winger as we have done for many years now.
