Tell me something, would you turn it down.

Regardless of the competition, you're guitarist sounds like a waste of time. I've played with people like that before and there is just no point whatsoever. There are plenty of other guitarists around that may not be as good, but what jerk you about. My bass player isn't the most technically great bass player in the world. He's good, but not amazing. But he puts in the time and effort. If we have a rehearsal scheduled for next week and we have to learn a song, everyone has learnt it by that time. They're the sorts of people that are great to play with (providing they are actually half decent :p).

Scrap the guitarist, get a new one.

We've gone one on from that because we play the song on the night and analyse after.
My theory is that if we play it near the end of the last set everybody is too drunk to know.
Went to watch a band last night and the band were playing the chorus while the singer was singing the verse and it sounded awful and they couldn't get out of it.
I turned round to look at the audience and no-one knew.

If he's worried about it not being free to travel, offer to pay if it turns out it isn't?

If it is free no problem, if it isn't well you'll learn to listen to the skeptical one in future ;)

Sounds like the problem moved on from that to laziness.

Its the principal that no matter what he doesnt want to do band work. Not the fact os it being free anymore.

but if thats the excuse he's giving and you take it away then he's either got to say no it's cause I'm lazy (or give another excuse to the same end), and you know to drop him or he'll say yes. Either way you get a resolution rather than just whining, seriously the apathy one here is terrible and thats coming from someone who doesn't eat cause it's a hassle cooking...

I dont understand your terminology, simplify it for me, sorry to be a hassle but im not that great with words

if he's saying he's not going cause he thinks it's going to cost him, offer to pay if it does. That way he will say yes and go, or make another excuse.

If he makes the excuse/says no then you know he's just lazy and can get rid of him.

I think you already know the answer.
A band does not revolve around one person and if it means stopping for 3 months until the right member can be found then its worth it.
Believe me I've been in this situation many times.

He makes up excuses all the time though its not the first time, everytime we gig we have to ring him to see if he can do it, all the rest need no questioning.
