and also, there was a few of these birds flying around making a funny noise, so decided to get the 70-300 lens out and try a bit of 'birding'. A lot of respect goes out to you bird photographers, coz thats bloody hard!! I wouldnt normally post this terrible picture up (bare in mind its a 100% crop) but im intrigued as to what kind of bird it is. Could anyone shed any light?

Thanks guys. :)

How dya mean mate?

Sorry, should have been more explicit. The others look very 'washed out'. The third one is very 'bland' (colourwise; not enough to be either mono/duo-colour or B&W). The bird pics, just need some more 'clarity' as they also looked washed out.

Apologies, my works proxy bizarrely blocks out the second one, so cannot comment on that.

I do love no.4 though, toning is lovely as is your darks/lights.

:)

1 there is a faint sign of lens flare. Make sure you're blocking any light from the side and be wary of flare.

4 is great :)

didnt notice the lens flare on this monitor, but looked at it at work and i could see it, weird. thanks for the comment :)

Actually I love the colours in #2 , my favourite of the bunch

Thanks buddy, i know its quite OTT but i quite liked it also.

Ill have a little play about with a few of them tonight to see what i can come up with, thanks for your comments. As for the bird pics, i know theyre terrible shots, i just wanted someone to identify them for me, as id never seen them before.

Apologies, must have been a bit rushed as I only just noticed your comments prior to your bird pics. I have the same lens as that and have to agree its pretty tricky. Although I am using a D40 so no auto-focus so would have to manually focus and zoom at same time ... I have kinda given up ;-) Perfect for slow moving things though (like ducklings!)

As for your IR shots. Are you still using a D70? I have a D40 and a Hoya IR R72 but have struggled big time to get anything that even resembles an IR shot from it. I think the issue I have is with setting the WB. No matter what I do the shot always comes out red. I know you should take a shot against brightly lit green grass, but still just cannot get it to go. I have heard the D40 is far more sensitive to IR than a D50/D70 which may be why I am having an issue.

I would be very interested in seeing the stages of your shot. Ideally what the shot you took looked like upon setting the White Balance and then again what it looked like after swapping channels and then finally what it looked like at the end. I just am stumped as to how to get it spot on.

This is what number 4 looked like straight out of the camera:

and this is what happens to it when i used Brads IR action which you can get from here : http://www.outdooreyes.com/photo95.php3

Then i just played about with levels, and colour balance until i was happy with it. Give it a go! although i think i have read somewhere that th D40 isnt as good at taking IR photos.

Cheers

Cheers fella! That is exactly what I was after.

Its funny, as I always thought that the initial shot (after setting the WB correctly) should not be as red. All of mine have been as red as this but I always decide to bin them thinking they are incorrect. I think i will actually take a few sample shots and have a play.

I have the channel swapping action already so think I will have a little play.

Funny am at home now, and on a calibrated monitor, and number 1 had a lot more definition. 2 looks a little bright, 3 I think just need a few darker highlights and 4 is very nice indeed. May just have been my works monitor ... my bad ;)

Thanks again and keep the photos coming, really like some of your work. :)
