Question for those with a QX6700 Quad core???

At stock or overclock?

On water my q6600 at 3.6Ghz is 39 degs idle and 65 under load but a lot depends on the volts going through it.

From memory, idle was mid to high 20's at stock but mine is a low VID chip and needed less than 1.2v to run at stock.;)

Now that does worry me slightly.

I know the QX6700 is a hot chip but mine runs idle at mid to late 50's at stock speek.

I have even just upgraded my hsf to the Thermalight 120 Extreme which has reduced the temps slightly.

Any idea's.

Just the usual:

What are you using to get your temps. Make sure you use coretemp or realtemp or everest and quote core temp, not cpu temp. Bios readings can be wrong and so can cpu temp (in my case my cpu temp is reading at 60degs at idle with the current bios, before then it only read 30 degs)

What is airflow like through you case?

Check the application of thermal compound and make sure you use enough/not too much.

Is it mounted correctly? Cause I would have thought the Thermalight 120 Extreme would drop temps a lot over the stock cooler.

What are your load temps like?

That will do for starters. ;)

First of all I am using Coretemp.

Secondly, With regards to airflow I have hidden cables & tied them up using cable ties the best I can which is a big improvement on how it was like.

Thirdly, I applied a light coating of AS5 on both the CPU & hsf evenly.

Fourthly, I was originally using the Artic Feezer Pro 7 before this not the stock cooler but the Thermalight is a much bigger hsf. With regards to the mounting it seems very secure & the spring loaded screws are tightened up to the max.

After playing Age Of conan it could get upto mid 60's.

Thanks Ben.

I think I may have gone wrong applying the thermal paste.

I have thinly covered both the processor & hsf.

I will clean & re-apply & see what happens.

Maybe not but worth a try. I always do the cling film finger method of a thin layer over the cpu. You may have gone too far doing both.

While you have the hsf off, check it for flatness and your cpu. You may need to lap at least the hsf.

on my old QX6700 @ 3.3 with 1.35v i was getting 39-40 idle under water (d-tek fuzion)

under a Zalmann CPNS9700 NT nvidia air cooler i got similar temps @ 3ghz and stock volts.

they do run hot ive had mine thermal shutdown in the past when i was trying to get it over 3.6ghz i think that was arround 1.6vcore and hitting 100 degrees.

Just realised qx6700 are b3 steppings aren't they? In which case they will run much hotter than my g0 q6600.

yup

jsut read above those thermalright are well known for not having a flat base so would be the first thing to check.

I dont know if you have the QX6700 stock HSF but using that on mine it idled at arround 50 and went upto 75-80 ish underload.

Wow.

Your doing well getting those temps with a stock hsf.

Obviously, this processor isn't ideal for overclocking.

If someone brought out like a small cooler which you could connect to the front of your case where the intake fan is located so it's blowing chilled air into the system would be ideal.

at idle, my qx6700 is running at 60 60 58 58, at full load I reckon it's mid 80's, but that is with the standard intel hsf. thinking of upgrading it to a q9450 or xeon x3350, haven't quite decided yet and then slapping on a thermalright ultra 120 extreme. what cpu do you think will be best for oc'ing? heard good things about both.
