Some may remember that a while ago I had a deposit on a BMW 840, well unfortunatly due to a bank mess up my money failed to clear in time and I lost the car :(

However finally our trust fund intrest (not touching the principle) has come free and after clearing some 20k of debts I have between 15-18k to spend on a second car (THe range rover is the daily beast to Lug about my baby and shopping etc.

As this is a second car reliability, economy etc are irrelevant as it is a hobbie car, also my leaon being cleared frees me up some £500 a month so maintance of the new car again isn't an issue.

At the moment the top of my list is my all time dream car a TVR 4.5, I know all the problems, faults etc more than anyone after some 11 years of reading up on them and studying every forum, no to mention a close chumming having one and an ex's dad having a chimira

Bar any engine. clutch problem I can do all the other work myself and look forward to doing so as it is a hobby and enjoy that sort of thing.

I am looing forward to more of a drivers car as my modded e46 M3 just felt too tame (my e36 m3 felt more involved).

Any opinions (awaits the it will blow up break down coments) on my choice are welcome and any alternative sugestions, but remember this is all about it being a hobby and having something classic with a good community.

Also at £289 fully comp as a secong car / classic policy with agreed valuation you can't maona about the insurance :D

If you've been after one for that long and you now have the money to live your dream then just do it. Don't see how anyone here can tell you not to.

Am I the only one thinking £20K debts + £15K of car all paid out of interest from a trust fund = very big trust fund!

To the question in hand however, if you keep some cash spare to keep it running on the road then why not live your dream. If it is a weekend toy and you want an involving drive then the usual sports cars might be sugggested, Caterhams, Elises etc. or how about something like a Porsche 911 circa 964 vintage?

It is a reasonable trust fund that has another 7 years on it so this interest release will be there again when we get the full principle, so that will pay a house outright or for us to emigrate and get a house abroad.

Also the intrest was over 50k but capital gains tax took care of some of that :(

This is currently top of my list having the later interior (Tuscan seats) later lights, and being the lightweight is only 1100kg with 420 bhp (will need a remap and induction kit to actually get that though)

The V8 is a far more reliable engine (no shearing cranks from the 4.2 or awful cams etc from the speed 6) and this one has the replaced clutch that is oh so important.

The sellar is a regular Pistonhead member and TVR Specielist so a safer bet.

Want want want want!!!!

Money clearing within 12 days grrr (been waiting 4 months already as it was heavily locked in due to the intrest rate).

Never meet your heroes.

Especially something like that....

....but if you're prepared for it and the potential disappointment, why not....

Very true comment, much like on Top gear when Jame May drove the Contach and it distroyed his childhood dreams.

My mate had one so am not a total Cerb virgin and I am fully prepared for intermitant electrics all the way up to that engine rebuild.

As I have previously said my M3 ddin't grab me as much as I had hopped but still loved the experience, and the TVR will be a full sensory experience and somehting I feel I need to do in my life time, even if it really isn't what I hopped for a good one will hold its value pretty well so I will not lose as much as I did on the M3 (20k car + 7k mods sold for 16k after a year :()

didn't you have a yank pickup or 4x4 a while ago? What happened to that?

Ahh yes The yank puick up blew its tranny and was getting complaints due to its didth blocking my road a bit so sold that , and oddly was the sadst I have ever been when getting rid of a car!

The lifter Discovery blew a transfer box (I hate gearboxes) but it was the original and was on 256k miles, I was going to fix it (bought the box) but we had to move due to a bun in the oven so I had to get shot of that.

Now I have a 4.6 Range Rover for day to day duties.

I do like changing cars, my bank balance doesn't though :p luckily my misses loves cars (especially v8s) but I haven't told her the Cerb has a flatplain crank so although gorgeous in sound doesn't sound like the v8 burble she loves ;)

that one you linked to is stunning!!! really stunning...

Isn't it :) The only think I would like to do is get the light pods smoothed into the wings, but as most TVRs are painrted in the old "thinners" style paint you have to get the wings and bonnet done to hide the slight colour mismatch with two pack paint.

Please get a TVR! The Cerb shouldn't have too many engine troubles, so you might be safe haha.

First off congrats on the baby dude , its been a long time. still see your old M3 all the time .

If the TVR is the car of your dreams and you have the money and not worried about fixing it a few times then whats stopping you :D

Think they are about the pinnacle of TVR reliabillity yes :D

lol indeed they are, when you think the engine is based around F1 engine design (of the time) and is one of the highest bhp per ltr NA engines ever made the fact that they put in such high milage (relatively) makes them pretty reliable for what is a race engine.

The Speed 6 engines are what have realy given TVR a bad name, even when rebuilt they still fail very quickly although the AJP8 vs s6 engine debate is a fearcly fought debate (nvidia vs ati level)

Clutches only last 30k but with a renound awful handbrake it is argued that all owners hold it on the clutch :D

Cheers chap, I am over in worthing now with My little girl (4 weeks old) andmy better half.

Tom has now sold my M3 as he is in Japan being taught martial arts by the Grand masters so you won't see the beast anymore (although my e36 M3 is owned by someone in Hove).

Book a test drive... If you like you buy! :D

Looks like a lovely example imo

Will be contacting him tomorrow, it is more than I wanted to spend (15k really) but it ticks all the boxes. I needc a good look over all the paperwork to see what it has and hasn't had done to it. At that milage it maybe due new shocks if on standard TVR ones as they perish and leak, some Nitrons, AVO or Gaxz golds improve handling for about 1k so that needs taking into account. Also I want to know if the engine is original or rebuilt as again at that milage it maybe required which is 5k off the bat (hence me wanting a 15k car really).

Ironically it will be a step up in economy for me over the 10-12 mpg the Rangie gives me :p

This one is also on the cards (interior not as nice but ok) and is lower milage has had clutch done has the short intake and remap by a reputable company and has new shocks. It isn't a lightweight though and has the older seats.
