Passengers drinking alcohol in a car

In america and canada open liquor in a vehicle is illegal.
However, in england, afaik, it isn't.

not illegal however if they feel that the passengers are distracting you with their drinking then they can pull you over and give everyone a telling off. im sure they categorise it under driving without due care and attention/not in proper control of car... they can make anything stick if they wanted

me or my mates never did.
we would drive to parties and what not, but not just driving around.

i'll have this problem coming up soon. designated driver to a gig. 2hr drive there with 4 blokes i know will want to drop the hammer
i'm telling them it's a beer or two at most on the way down, can't be marsed with a drink fest going on

A friend of mine was pulled for allegedly speeding seconds after leaving the pub. He was straight but his friend was drunk. They did the usual checks and let him on his way, they had no issue with the other guy being drunk and drinking alcohol in the car

Drive with any intoxicating liquor in your hand and get seen you will get pulled, whether you are over the limit or not you will be tested.

Funny thing is irrespective of legality people will whine for being pulled in such a circumstance.

I got pulled once because me and my mates were seen bumbling into my car from a night out. Wasn't surprised though. I was breathalysed, passed and we went on our way. Very nice police officers as well, because they weren't traffic.

You'll find they won't drink loads anyway otherwise you'd have to stop in every service station for the loo

This. I still have flash backs of running down the hard shoulder of some motorway trying to find my mates car after having to relieve myself during a traffic jam. Drinking and cars don't mix.

Quite a random thread. There's nothing wrong with drinking as a passenger.
It would cause problems on planes, ferrys etc.

If it was causing a danger on the road, I'm sure laws about due care and attention could come into play.

I don't like my passengers drinking as it means we may get pulled as it's generally front bottoms you see doing it.

I've done the whole drive about until the wee hours when I got my car though. Driving home at 3am in the dark with loads of untouched snow over everything with pink floyd playing was epic. Stopped in via a car park for some slidey slidey.
