I'm buying a new car in the next 2 months or so, so i've been perusing the classifieds for a 55 plate chromed up ST220.

Anyway, whilst looking ive come across some "optimistic" adverts. Prime example of which is this one

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/515466.htm

No pictures, no grasp of english or punctuation and he's expecting people to cough up 40 large (enough for all sorts of exotica as seen in the other thread), and comfortably more than the best impreza ever made, the Imreza STI Spec C RA-R BRAND NEW

to quote ricky gervais, "is he having a laugh?"

Is anyone bloody not trying to buy a Mondeo on this forum - there really is a very strange pied piper mentality on this forum that doesnt exist in other petrolhead forums:confused:

There are a few of us, we are a rare breed but we do exist :p ;) :D

Wow. Just wow.

And no I'm not trying to buy a Mondeo either, although if I was looking for a car rg-Tom's would tempt me!

you know what, i totally agree

i'm honestly having second doubts about buying the car for exactly that reason - everybodys getting one.

But the fact of the matter is. I've got 10k to spend. I've got a wife and child and take UK Holidays. So i need a car that can carry large ammounts of stuff, so a focus wont cut it. It needs to be an MPV or a saloon.

In the saloon category, we've got the old shape Passat W8, the Vectra VXR (if you expand your budget a wee bit), Mondeo ST220, Accord 2.4 Type S, Jag S Type, Audi A4 S-line.

Audi's are very very bland, and expensive for what they are. The Accord is also very old man feeling, despite the good bhp. Vectra is .. well a vectra. And the passat is the old shape and not paricularly nice. But does have a W8 and a VW so not cheap to run. Other alternative is the Octavia VRS, but my best mates got one and i'd never live it down. And i dont like it enough, even if i was to ignore the fact my best mates got one.

What else could you logically spend 10k on ? apart from a BMW which would illicit exactly the same "pied piper" criticisms.

Don't want to drag this off topic n all, but what about the Mazda6 MPS?

thing is though, is to get a nice ST220, i only need to spend 8-9k. To get a mazda 6 MPS, the cheapest on autotrader is 11k, and that prob wont hang around for long. Rest are more like 12k to 13k. So allthough in my budget (i'd say max 13k for me) most of the people on here who bought ST220s, had sub 10k budgets so wont consider them. Hence why everybody is buying ST220s

I have given the 6 MPS i thought. Its just finding one to drive. Nearest one to me on autotrader is 30 miles away.

How about a Seat Altea XL or Ford S-Max?

S-Max 2.5 Titanium is rare as rocking horse ... and quite expensive. You'll struggle to find anything worth looking at under about 14k. Theres the odd one, but most are less. Then theres the fact that Cruise Control isnt even standard on the titanium, nor is leather. So its nowhere near as well specced as the ST220. And it doesnt handle as well because its an MPV and a bit of a barge.

just read the parkers review on these

Top Gear neglected to mention they're 4 door only and with a tiny boot, not to mention no folding rear seats due to the structural re-inforcing behind them. So if you need to get anything large home, you're stuffed as you cant fold the seats at all.

So its a bland Audi, Copycat BMW, Understeering Vectra VXR, old mans Accord Type S, Overrated Skoda Octavia VRS, Expensive to Run Jag or Passat W8, or the ST220

The ST220 is still the best practical performance car for the family man at ~ the 10k mark.

I can't imagine why you would want to spend £10k on an ST220. There is simply no need to spend that on an old shape Mondeo when £6k gets a nice enough one.

10k is the rought price. I know what i want - black, with nice options and the last chromed up shape.

These are going for around 10k atm. I know i can get an early facelift 53/04 for just over 6k, but i like the black w/ chrome on the new shape.

Sometimes the most obvious answer is the right one.

Save yourself a wad of cash by getting an earlier ST and put it towards something else when its time to change?
