Whats an resonable wage?

How long is a piece of string? If your wage is enough for you to have a good standard of living (I.e. above the poverty line) then be happy. Being able to buy the posh car or latest gadget does not equate to happiness and if you think along those lines then you are sadly mistaken.

Nothing wrong with nearly 17K and I'd take what people say here with a pinch of salt as it is, after all, an Internet forum.

I myself earn 78.42K a year after tax*

* I don't! :D :(

I was an IT technician (in a school), then a network manager (in a school), and 2 years ago started a company providing IT support, sales and services mainly to the educational and small business sectors.

nice one, I'm doing a bunch of programming type certs at the moment which will hopefully look good on my CV. The job I'm in pays decent enough (roughly £30-£32k with my support benefits) but I'm not sure how much further up the ladder I can go and need give myself some other quals so I can move onto a bigger company sometime in the future, *fingers crossed

I'm aiming for 25k, I Should be Just over that this year.

25K is where I deem you can lead a reasonable lifestyle. By no means brilliant, but you shouldn't be scratching around the back of the sofa at the end of the month. But this does kind of depend on your mortgage or rent costs.

Also, your desire for gadgets, cars, shiny things plays a big impact on what you term "reasonable" wage.

My mate earns 13.5K give or take, he has a house* a couple of cars (he tinkers with cars for a hobby) and is as happy as a pig in ****, even though he doesn't have much money and has been doing up his house for the last five years one bit at a time.

I'll say it again in this Celebrity obsessed, get rich quick, buy more things cultire that money != Happiness.

Saying that poverty isn't fun neither....

* purchased before the stupid rise in house prices. His mortgage is around 240 quid a month.

That sounds lie what I'm aiming for, but need so much more due to house prices. Apart from pc which I buy 2nd hand bits for and usually 2 yearly, I don't have many gadgets.

I'm on 20k atm, which is a whole lot more comfortable than when I was part-timing which earned me 13k over 18 months. I got my job through friends, and got the current contract because I stuck around for 18 months, which in turn was because I enjoyed my job and the working environment a lot.

To me the last point is the most important really - since my job didn't really feel like a job to me, I was very much able to get on happily with life on a budget. I've got more responsibility now including out of hour stuff sometimes. Still very happy and lucky to have much job.

Unfortunately I can't really move to another part of the country due to the nature of my job :<

I can only go up my career ladder by two steps I think, which could go up to 40k first, and 60-80k last, if I'm lucky.

However my passion's in film making (writing and directing) and we all know how safe an industry it is to go into...

i made just under 40k last year,

not bad for cleaning the sick out the back of diesel octavias :)

With that much money you'd think you'd be able to actually buy something without it turning into a bodged mess :) Perhaps old habits die hard ;)

Good luck with that, it's hard work but everyone I know who works in the industry is happy there.

A friend of my wife who has a couple of BAFTAs went though the BBC trainee programme and I've got another friend who is looking to move into film via advertising.

He's producing a lot of major ads at the moment (Guinness, Playstation, Sony) and he's getting a lot out of it on the creative side.

Tough to get into so try every opportunity you get.

I started my career in IT roughly 18 months ago. My CV had no previous employment or anything worthy workwise. I did have an HNC in computing though.

Started on a helpdesk, got promoted to Desktop, and now i'm general IT engineer (Server, citrix, some desktop). I'm on 12k more than what i started on. I'm still not happy with this as i want to learn more and earn more. It's as simple as that.

It may sound bad but the more money i earn, the more things i want to buy, and the more expensive my purchases get.

18 months ago i was left with £0.00 at the end of the month, and now i'm left with £0.00 at the end of the month. It'll be like this forever!!

The more you earn the more you spend, its just how it is. Your tastes become more expensive too.

Imagine you could earn 50k, spend the bare minimum to live on for a couple of years, i reckon you could save 60k in 2 years. in theory.. would never happen though :)

I'm on 1,478,260.87 x my age (23)

....... providing I win the Euro Millions ;)
