New plates

Absolutely, it's amazing how much a nice new set of smart, legal plates can freshen up a cars look.
Totally agree. It has been the first thing I've done to my first 3 cars :)

First thing I did on mine was get some new plates on there, I did them myself at work but didnt fancy my own text or anything, just went for the GB which has a blue border coming off it surrounding the plate, to avoid water leaks I didnt bother with screws and used our extra strong double sided foam that we use on every car we do, never had a comeback off them yet with someone saying they fell off :)

I also have the 3D lettering which I quite like too, afaik its road legal?

As regards the 145 number at the bottom, we sometimes get batches of the plate fronts from our suppliers without them so im not sure if its worth mentioning as it seems it could well mean an MOT failure!

Just to clarify, are the standard uk plates from fancy plates mot failures? Or do they now comply with the regulations? If not, is there anywhere online that I can get them from? Oh and it's a 2002 so does come under the new legislation.

If the government is again enforcing plate legislation (It was suspended at one point) technically yes they are MOT failiures if your car is a 51 plate or newer.

Just reading on fancy plates and found this:

Fancy Plates guarantees peace of mind in that all plates ordered through this constructor are suitable for use on UK public roads and will pass any MOT/PSV tests.

Not anymore I take it?

Depends how old it is - I can assure you the plates I ordered for the Mondeo would not pass an MOT if:

a) The laws were being enforced as they were for a period last year (They then suspended it for some reason
b) It was on a 51 plate car or newer.

The ones I have don't have their postcode on nor do they have the BS AUd mark. Which is the reason I ordered them ;)

So effectively, don't use Fancyplates or anyone other than an official plate supplyer if you've got a 51 plate or newer car.

I do know that No1 Showplates print the BS *** **** on the plates, my friend ordered some plates from them last week and it was printed on :)

I'm not sure why people think GB symbols are ugly and annoying - in many (in fact I think we're one of the only exceptions) EU countries they're mandatory.

Well i've just had an MOT so have got a year of nice plates if needs be. I'd rather not have an MOT failure though. Sigh, why must such trival regulations be introduced?

Where are we at the moment with regards to it being suspended or not? Do you know if it's still suspended?

I just believe that numberplates look cleaner and less cluttered without them. If they were mandatory then my opinion doesn't really matter. And seeing as i'm never likely to drive abroad, i can live without them.

...if the case was that i was going abroad, i'd take the GB plates over a sticker any day :)

I think the ones with the GB or EU sign on the side look really a bit crap, planning on replacing the ones on the mini soon enough. Noticed the text is embossed as well which is surely illegal, albeit quite unnoticable.
