with rather disappointing price gtx280 and its small performance leap over previous generations. i wonder what card should i go for next.

ATI's offering isn't really an upgrade (except 4870x2)
nVidia's gtx260 is such a small upgrade, isn't worth the money, while gtx280 is a bit too expensive.

personally, multi-GPU with its crappy minimal FPS never appealed to me, a gamer.

so, with the budget of £200 to max 250 in mind (250 + 100 for the sold 8800GTX) what should i do?

should all 8800GTX owners wait until August when 4870x2 drives gtx280 price down, then grab the more affordable gtx280? is this a good plan?

you know, up untill now ive always thought the 9800 series was a joke, and just a pathetic attempt to milk money out of an old generation, but with what ive seen so far from the new GTX200 series, they suddenly look more appealing. Especially the GX2

Erm, you've pretty much answered your own post. You have no upgrade path right now. As you have an aversion to multi-gpu setups, keep your 8800GTX until the 280 drops to a price you are happy with.

completely agree and your right

there isnt anything "worthy" just right now that i think would make you want to upgrade and part with cash. i dont have a clue what your monitor setup is like, maybe if your running a smaller screen, splash on a 24inch samsung or something.

Can't follow your logic there. If two 4850's in crossfire kill a GTX280 and the 4870 are 20-30% quicker so on that basis the 4870x2 might be up to 50% quicker than a GTX280 and is expected to sell for £330 ish, you are suggesting you then grab a slower GTX280 after Nvidia drops the price?

Why not just buy the cheaper and faster (expected) 4870X2 which if it delivers the performance expected, really would be a decent upgrade to your GTX

because multi-GPU solutions have not been matured. sure, 3870x2 is faster than 8800GTX, but from what i've heard, it doesn't offer as good gameplay experience. same case as 9800Gx2, it's faster, doesn't mean it offers good FPS with newer games.
why would one want to wait for optimisations on new games when single GPU solutions (although slightly slower) chucks out better performance for the 1st month?

thanks for the 8800GTX vs gtx280 comparison. looks like it's a worthy upgrade after all.

any speculations on its price after 4870x2 comes out?
if 4870x2 will be £330, will gtx280 drop to £350? (where i think i can afford)

Only if Nvidia get their yields up and go to 55nm.

I think that at £350 Nvidia won't be making any money selling the card atm.

However, if the 4870x2 is 50% quicker then Nvidia will have to sell at a loss to sell them so maybe.

I'm tempted by the GTX 280 to be honest, it all depends on how much I can recoup from the ultra on "well known auction site".

Even the 260 might be worth a punt to be honest, 80% of the 280 performance roughly for a small upgrade fee, after all they can be had for around £270.

Nothing against ATI at all but just never got on with the cards or the drivers really.

then what date will that me? Nov next year?

No need to upgrade until you cant max out your fave game ?
For me multiplayer gaming is what I love and there's no game I cant max at the moment even on my 8800gt @1680 granted I cant do maximum aa and af etc but I don't really care about all that.
The next game that I will probably have to upgrade for is battlefield 3 which is a long way off yet.
