Cut-price supermarket booze to be banned to stamp out binge drinking

Hmm this is interesting from the article...

Tesco has already called for ministers to act over cheap booze.

WTF? Tesco sell it very cheaply, you can buy a 2 litre bottle of cider, over eight units, for 94p the last time I looked.

I wasn't aware anyone was forcing Tesco to sell it that cheaply.

Probably all the kids they sell it to. :p

Competitors low prices force Tescos prices down to compete. If they put it back to "normal" prices then Tesco can up the price and make more money because everyones prices are "normal". This is why they're pushing for it.

I realise that :) The point is that Tesco are trying to portray themselves as the guardians of morality but that is BS - they could raise their prices now if they wished.

I don't agree with forcing companies to sell at 35p a unit, anyway. Something like a 4 pack of Fosters will end up costing £5.60 - that is ridiculous.

edit - no it won't - my maths is rubbish :D It would actually be more like £2.80 which is less than it costs already.

Yep its true Tescos are an evil company. Like the Tobacco company on Family guy. All sweetness and light at face value but in the board room they're all shooting puppies.

I never said they were evil. I just think that their primary, if not sole, motivation is to maximise profits. A goal they have pursued ruthlessly for many years. As they have every right to. That is fine; what isn't fine is them making out they want to raise prices in order to save our society but the government is stopping them :D

I don't agree with this, but I think I'm seduced by the 21 thing.... to be honest...

Seconded. :)

aye me too...

The reason we have a binge drinking issue in this country and in other countries with the view that alcohol before 18 is taboo. Then they reach that age and alcohol is viewed as "oh yeah great lets get smashed" and the same reason they drink it in bus stops, because there is nowhere else to drink.

In other countries and specifically European countries children are introduced and told to respect alcohol. They drink it to make their food taste better, not to 'get smashed'. The USA has 21 in many states, it doesn’t solve anything, they have the same problem with alcohol and the effects it causes.

What we could do in this country is get incentives to parents and school to introduce children to it, and not say “don’t do that, stop that, put that down” – because they will just jump in feet first when they have access to it. Don’t know how to do it, but that’s why we elect the government.

Tesco and the government are trying to portray themselves as the saviours of binge drinking. Come on papers show the masses what they are really for.

Education is definatley the key, but our goverment seem to retarded to realise it or too tight to fund it.

Stupid Stupid Stupid.

Enforce the laws and regulations they already have.
Fine or even take away licenses from premises that serve underage people.
Arrest people if they are causing trouble while drunk. If they are underage, chase up the parents.

Don't bring in new regulations or taxes that punish the majority of us that can drink responsibly...

Alcohol is a legalised drug. Legalised only because of its long history and obscene taxation. It's a privilege, not a right. Be grateful you're allowed it at all, whatever the price.

The under 21 will be a short term fix, like in Scotland, where it worked wonders..in one town...over a year

The masses (18-20) who behave shouldn't lose out to the minority who don't.

To be honest I think this would only work to a small degree. You see your argument implies that because we were not introduced to alcohol at a younger age once we get to be teenagers we go wild and start binge drinking. The only problem is that 15 years later your average 30 year old still goes out and binge drinks, suerly they must have it out of there system by now....but seemingly not.

The fact is that some people in this country just like getting drunk, the question you have to ask is why?

What?

Why do you think that we should be grateful that the government allows it? The government are administrators not overlords.
