PS3 Bites The Dust!

Nah I dont really think so, either, jsut curious as I followed the BR Laser devlopment rather closly and knew Sony only really had one good working version, so was curious how it would have held out for long (hrs used).

My 60gb model has just packed up as well with what sounds like the same thing / its also making a wuring noise.. The shop has told me to contact Sony as they wont touch it after a year.

Give Sony a go then Nintenjo, they've helped a few people just outside of warranty (including me), but I don't know HOW far out of warranty you are.

Spoke to Sony and they said i should just take it back to where i got it from! The lady said the ammount of PS3's failing in the last couple of months is turning into a nightmare for Sony :s

People must understand when they compare with the RRoD how serious it actually was. It was a failure rate of 25-33%. That's a huge number by any standards. Not even the PS1/2 laser problems were that bad.

Personally it is not surprising at all to hear of Sony having issues with laser lens and disc read problems, as they have never quite shook it off in well over a decade, but comparisions to 360 failure rates are unwarranted. If you have a PS3 you still have a reasonable expectation that it will not fail. That's not the case with the 360 where you have a 1 in 3 chance that it will die on you after extended gameplay sessions.

Touch wood though, you never know. Some guys on here are on their first 360 having gone through several PS3s (such as Nokkon) and others like myself have gone through several 360s but never had a single issue with a launch PS3.

People forget that the 360 has had a whole extra year to accumulate problems than the PS3. 30% failure rate? In a year's time it might not be too far off.

The 360 problem was actually more like 33% for RROD, this doesnt include the GPU failures, DRE failures, scratch disk failures etc etc. The original 360 was released in an unfit state, microsoft bypassed a few things in the design stage of the 360 to get it out first, and footed the bill via a warranty for the rrod. Microsoft was lucky, if it wasnt able to throw money about like it can, the 360 should have had a full recall. If Ford had a car that 2/3 will stop working think of the flak they would have got, and it would have instigated a full recall. As an electronics test engineer, Microsoft should have done this not a " oh look there may be a little problem but were so nice we'll give you 3 yrs on 1 specific fault". I would be surprised if the PS3 failure was as high as 5% (unless your nokkon), most of which is down to the BD laser, this is down to a component problem, unlike microsofts poor design and rush job for the original 360.
Few notes about rrod

Original Xbox360 purchased on release date = borked on release date, managed to repair it myself the same night as retailer was saying I wouldnt have one for like 3 months:/ machine died completely about a year ago.
Got myself an updated version just a few days out of warranty and again borked... managed to repair that also with reseating the HS and adding some artic silver, But again lasted a couple of months then bam... dead...
Now got myself an elite and touch wood, has been running ok for a month...
Both my PS3's (60gb and 40gb) have been flawless...
