I would have to say that the majority on this Forum are probably well educated and intelligent people. It is primarily a computer forum after all.

Why is it then, that the spelling and grammar is quite often shocking? For example "should have" instead of "should have". Or "there" instead of "their". Or "brake", in place of "break". Etc. Etc.

Is school really that bad these days? Are teachers worse? Are people more stupid, or ignorant? It cannot be deliberate, so is it simply that people can't be bothered?

Your and you're really annoys me. I don't know why when people get it wrong. Our student paper makes all these mistakes on massive headlines and adverts. Kind of says something although on forums etc. you could argue it doesn't really matter.

I think a lot of people just don't care.

I was a perfectionist at school, which ultimately led to some problems, but before them I strived extremely hard to make sure everything was correct. For example I would be close to tears when I was around 11 years old and I had spelt a word wrong in a spelling test.

That annoys me so much. Nottingham Uni's student paper is an absolutely joke, last term they printed the same story that was on page 2 onto page 3, so that you didn't read the end of the page 2 story on page 3, you just started reading the same story again. Utter shambles, the editor should be fired for that, let alone the amount of ridiculously simple grammatical and spelling errors.

Never been good at language. Used to have extra lessons on reading. Had to spend lunchtimes writing instead of playing. Learnt about 6 different way of writing to improve my hieroglyphics.

Some people are good at maths, some languages, some computing, some at sports or what ever. No one gets upset at people who are poor at maths, so why English?
We can't all be good at everything.

The argument to me, as you say, is that if you can make yourself understood then what is the problem? I would counter by saying that the prevalence of bad spelling, in particular, suggests that it is an education problem.

Put yourself in the shoes of an employer with two CVs in front of him. One with bad grammar/spelling, otherwise identical.

I wrote into ours and said they should spend time proofing it perhaps and look for obvious mistakes. They published an article saying that my english was no better in my letter (there were some mistakes :( ) But that it is okay still because a paper is written by people and they make mistakes... So it's not their fault. Our paper just annoys me, the articles aren't interesting and half the time are ill-researched and plain wrong. Wanna-be tabloid writers

Although when it's a student paper it's also an advert for the Uni, and it says something if we can't put a sentence together properly.

You're kinda missing the point.

Maybe I spelt spelling and grammar incorrectly then. 'cos I dun a serch, :p:D

I think you might have had more success searching for "grammer" (sic), that is the usual one.

Personally while I like to see correct spelling and grammar I am not terribly bothered provided an attempt has been made to be right. I try not to pick up people on simple typos except, of course, when they are complaining about other people and their errors.
