Spelling and Grammar..Yes or no?

Put yourself in the shoes of an employer with two CVs in front of him. One with bad grammar/spelling, otherwise identical.

this isnt a CV writing exercise, its not a paper that will be published. its not legal documentation. its not going to be reviewed and marked.
my CV is perfect, my communications in work are more than good enough, my documentation is fine (which shocks me!).

im not the best at english so it takes a fair bit of effort to make everything perfect. since this is just a forum post i dont really care about it.

in uni work and stuff i make the effort though.

Which is?

I'd say that only a very small proportion of the forum has an actual real problem with grammar and spelling (such as yourself), and they are the only ones really with an excuse. People such as yourself (you have dyslexia IIRC?) aren't really being questioned here.

And people do often get upset with people for being bad at maths if it's a basic error.

I think you might have had more success searching for "grammer" (sic), that is the usual one.

Personally while I like to see correct spelling and grammar I am not terribly bothered provided an attempt has been made to be right. I try not to pick up people on simple typos except, of course, when they are complaining about other people and their errors.

Not my intention SPW. More of a concern that it is simply a symptom of society in decline. :(

Everything's a symptom of society in decline nowadays. Society isn't declining at all, and to be honest, what the hell does it mean to say society is in decline?

means we are going to regress back to the apes!

That's an interesting point of view. Would you regard respect for others to be on the increase?

What shocks me is the fact that there are spelling mistakes in official documents.

The Royal Navy & Royal Marines pay + benefits information sheet had one, as did another leaflet I received (can't remember what it was exactly).

I also spotted 3 errors within a single article in the fortnightly RAF newspaper.

Surely this means that the original writer, plus proof readers, plus the editor have completely failed to do their jobs? I can't see any other explanation.

Its about the same as it always was, however people have to realise that with 24 hour media coverage we are going to hear more of the bad stuff than the good stuff giving the illusion that things are going down the ****ter!

As for spelling and grammer, someone can be highly intelligent, a master of their field yet if that field is not english then it is wrong to assume they should be amazing spellers etc. I know people who are amazing at maths and science yet their grammer is terrible.

I feel mine is adequate for the forums. I am not stupid and despite reading constantly throughout my entire life I have never enjoyed a single English lesson. My mind is better suited to maths, science, problem solving etc. However that doesn't stop me evolving the way I write if I learn something new.

On the whole though, I accept that everyone is different and there are a lot more things to worry about than whether someone brought or bought something. I know what they mean and that is good enough for me.

Those people that constantly point out other peoples errors always make me picture them sitting at a kitchen table writing yet another complaint to their lcoal paper because some young scally has dropped litter outside their gate.

There are more important things in life.

It's not interesting at all. People haven't changed at all. People will always be stupid. Society's the same, it's just got different surroundings.

spelling and grammar doesn't really bother me. i've just completed a degree in english literature but it hasn't fostered the pedant inside me. it's had the opposite effect, if anything. as long as i can understand what's implied, to an extent, i'm happy.

Does this mean you regard someone who exhibits good grammar/spelling as pedantic???
