Bike Stolen...

This morning (7:40)I had my bike stolen...:(
It was outside the local newsagent whilst I went and bought something.
I was in the shop for about 3 mins and my bike was only a few meters away from me(outside).
The thing is, is that my bike is worth quite a bit over £500. Being a student it is really hard to earn that kind of money.
All I could think of doing was to call the police, they are getting back to me at some point today.
But to be honest the police never seem to find stolen bikes.

I know that the newsagent has paper routes, could this mean they might have insurance covering bike theft?

I really don't know what to do, I used my bike daily.

Any advice on what to do?

I think you can kiss that bike good bye, insurance companies would not pay for bike stolen without being locked secured unless you were physically mugged and took the bike off you or something.

If you didn't lock it you have probably lost it for good, I had my bike stolen last year from my back garden. The police managed to recover it because who ever used it left it at the scene of a burglary and I had the frame number.

By time I got it back I'd already had a new bike off the insurance. I didn't get it back in the condition It got stolen in, I had mudguards, computer, lights. I got it back covered in finger print dust with all the accessories missing I was gutted.

I sold it to my mate after that because I couldn't face doing it up a second time.

You need to be really careful where you leave your bike and when you do lock it with a decent shackle lock. I use 2 shackle locks nowadays after someone attempted to nick my new bike from outside work.

Sorry to hear about it anyway its always a horrible feeling to have something stolen, look on the bright side though a gang of youths could have beaten you to a pulp and then took it off you, I had this happen to me when I was a teenager.

Also I forgot to tell you, I had my past bike stolen from my back garden about a 2 years ago and got this new one off the insurance.
It really is gut wrenching to have it taken from under my nose.

No insurance companies pay up unless is locked securely to a permanent structure. Leaving a bike unlocked is an invitation to any passing ***** really.

I got a bike nicked from our Uni's 'secure' bike sheds. Someone bolt cuttered their way in but because it was securely locked I got the insurance. Glad it covered it as it was a £600 bike.

My advice is well no insurance will cover you. As painful as it is you will probably have to cut your losses and save for another. Police rarely find stolen stuff like this. But if you have a frame number and any identifying features give them to the police.

I feel your pain. For your next bike buy a £50 bike lock. The No Swearing! will have a hard time getting through it. I have two of them!

Not quite true! I had mine stolen from my driveway a few years ago, it was not locked to anything and was just lent against the wall, house insurance paid up without a fuss.

My advice would be to speak to your house insurance (or contents insurance if you are away at Uni) and see what they can do for you, you may get lucky, hopefully you will and will learn from this and secure your bike next time.

By that is your own bike taken on your own property, I am not sure I can claim off my insurance if my bike was taken off your drive, or i can claim off your insurance either.

I would love to be with your insurance company!! :p

Re: home insurance can cover you if you are not at home strangely enough. Mine covered me so long as my bike was locked safely away to something at anywhere I was staying. Worst you can do is ask. Don't get your hopes up is my advice. I didn't and when insurance paid up I was over the moon given that it was looking bleak.

Also insurance has certain conditions a lot of the time. For example mine only covered a bike up to the value of £600.

I wish you luck mate

I'm sorry that your bike got stolen Tizzer but in all honesty, you should have locked it up regardless of the amount of time you think you may be in a shop, especially since your bike is worth quite a lot of money. :(

You guys are right, it was my fault it got stolen, it just didn't occur to me that someone would steal it when I could come out of the shop at any second.

Life is harsh, Ill get hold of the insurance company and see if they can do anything otherwise I will just have to save up. :(

I have learnt my lesson, lock my bike up everywhere even if im going to turn my back for a min or so.

My friends wasnt locked and was just on his front garden.

They gave him a choice of bikes up to £750 he only bought it for £100 but because of the make they thought it was more for some reason.
You can get away with it

Why would the fact someone is inside a building stop someone from taking a bike? They get on it and they're gone. No chance of you catching up.

The whole shop has windows around the front. It must have been taken when I was paying for my stuff. I was pretty sure that if anyone did go to steal it I would have seen them, an got it back.(It was on the highest gear and im a pretty good 100m sprinter)

All in all it doesn't matter, I made a stupid mistake and wont do it again.

Everyone makes mistakes, unfortunately some can be expensive I guess. What bike was it. I have a Kona Scrap and I won't even lock it up outside anywhere.

It was a mongoose fireball 2007 with about £150 worth of part upgrades.
Rode it everyday, its pretty distinctive where i live because know one else has one.

Edit: It was £499 new when i got it but just realised you can get it for £350 now.(without the upgrades)

They do now.

On a serious note follow the advce of the above and ring your insurance company. Talk to them and ask them if there's anything that can cover it.

Also, go to the pound shop and buy three or four of those U locks and chains. They mightn't be as strong as proper ones, but when a theif sees four locks and chains on a bike he'll probably think twice. ;)

You made me smile
Thanks for you advice, looking on the net for new dirtbikes already.

Nothing back from the Insurance Company yet.

I've just got back from a police auction viewing and they have a wonderful collection of high end bikes including a Cannondale with the biggest lock ever on the frame (why it was not used is beyond me)as well as a good selection of Giant and Scott bikes all of which will go for about 1/4 of their real value
