Bike Stolen...

Oh my god!
Guys I was walking up town when a kid I knew was riding my bike!!
I asked him over and inspected the bike, it was.
He had bought it off a well know bike theft. Calling the police.
I have got it back right now. I am so happy!

I am going out to buy 2 bike locks...:D

One of the first things you learn in Cambridge is never leave your bike unlocked, even if its for 30 seconds. My good bike never leaves the garage and its cement post unless I'm riding it to work or racing it. My crappy bike I use for around town has two d-locks for both its wheels.

I am going out to buy 2 bike locks...:D
One will do, unless you've got quick release wheels, just make sure its good.

Great news, but you left the bike unlocked when there are well known bike thefts around? :o

LOL now that's damn lucky!! Congrats on gettin it back but shame you had learn the hard way about locking it up. Hopefully you can get the little sod who stole it in the nick(wouldn't hold my breath tho tbh:rolleyes:)

I ride BMX at outdoor parks that are sometimes in rough city areas. Just last tuesday in Leeds one of my friends bikes was stolen as he was riding at an outdoor park when a gang of hooded black lads armed with a hammer started swinging it around and demanding his bike. Not seen or heard of that one since.

Another time in Manchester a few of us were at a petrol station fixing a puncture, we were all stood outside with the bikes laying on the ground just next to us. Next thing we know a group of black lads come over, one grabs one of the bikes and ride off whilst the other lads try to force us off ours - luckily they went away having only taken one bike once the confrontation starts getting a bit out of hand and members of the public phone the police.

On a brighter note though, another of my house mates bikes was stolen (they cut through the lock) and a few days later a druggie turned up at the skate park offering to sell the bike for £15. Of course the lads at the skate park knew who's bike it was and bought it back (ignoring the fact that it was over £1000 new!) so the bike is now safely back with my house mate.

Quite interesting.

I've just got a new £500 bike, anywhere I take it, the chain goes weaved through the fork, front wheel, frame and back wheel, and locked against something seriously secure (tree, tall lamp post etc).

Just out of curiosity, as a few of you have mentioned it, where would I get the frame number? Where's it written/engraved on the bike? Always good to have something like that on file anyway, just in case.

Ta

So what about the person who bought said bike from bike theif? He was happy to give it to you? Are you sure he didn't steal it?

I'm sure he didn't steal it because he rode right past where it got stolen, he isn't dumb so it pushes me to believe it was someone else.

On my bike it is on the bottom right under the part where the crank is.

I didn't know he was well know until the guy said he steals a few bikes.

We asked around the shops for CCTV and the guy stealing it was on it, we told the police and the council are going to hand over their CCTV as the theft rides right past it.

Get a decent bike lock. You won't regret it. You are also very lucky, get a lottery ticket for me too please.

excuse me mr police office, someone attacked me today and stole my bike

they hit me with a phonebook (no marks)

Had my bike stolen off of the drive last year, I bought it real cheap off of a mate who got it free from sponsers. Got a new one on the insurance worth £1600, reckon I only paid £250 for it, have been slowly selling it bit by bit cos i don't really ride that much.

Same thing hapened to a mate, he got a new bike off of the insurance, then a dodgy mate from school stole the bike off of the druggie and gave it back, the original owner didnt want it despite it being in the same condition it was in when it was stolen, as it was pretty old anyway, so we gave back to the guy to sell off elsewhere. We were only 13 at the time and felt well 'gangster' having to ride around backstreets with our own stolen bike. We blatently did the wrong thing though.

A word of advice, either walk to the shop or have someone wait with the bike when you go in to buy your lock eh?;)

i cant believe that you had not learnt your lesson after you had a bike stolen for the first time. this is your second bike now stolen, i only hope to christ your 3rd bike gets some lock treatment.

you have learned a pretty expensive lesson here, Always lock up your bike in public, regardless of time away from it.

anyway , sympathy to you , i know how it feels.

Glad to hear you got your bike back, despite the fact that you should have locked it up before.

I'm intrigued by the CCTV aspect. Did the shops involve let you view it? If so then it's nice to see that they're breaking the DPA through their actions.

Hopefully the Police will make use of the footage though and arrest/charge the person who stole your bike.
