Right well i thought i was all set for doing the MEng in mechanical engineering as ive just finished my 3rd year and thought i did alright as it went a bit better than last year and was averaging almost 60%....

however just had a phone call off a lecturer to discuss my results as i am "boarderline" :( turns out my average is now 48%!!! so thats got me feeling pretty down in the dumps. now he said in the masters year the pass is 50% so i have 2 options, he said he could offer me a 2.2BEng now or i could still try the masters, ive got till about mon/tues to decide.

this is the phone call that woke me up today :( crappy start ay :p

but im undecided what to do cos i was really hoping for a 2.1 atleast, how much would the 2.2 effect me in my line of study when looking for jobs and such? also i have put down a summer retainer for my house for next year as i thought i was going to go on..

options.. stay on and hope for the best, or take it and run and start looking for a job...

hummm what are your opinions fellow engineers:confused::(
 
definately go for the MEng mate, not only because they've given you the option so you still might just come out with a 2.2/masters, but also because it gives you another year to up your average to a 2.1
 
i'd say go for it, work your arse off and you're not going to lose anything, could come out with a much better mark
 
I would go for it pal, you have to have a MEng to become chartered right??? It will definitely help you get a job when you graduate. 4 th year is generally the most interesting anyway!!

You cannot become a chartered engineer (CEng) with a BEng (Only incorporated engineer IEng)unless you do lots of additional things to try to get you to the standard of MEng that they recognise. I could be chartered in 4 years time with my MEng, simple to meet objectives (except innovation one), and prepare youself for additional responsibility. Im even going to be chartered by the IMECH-E when my course is accredited by the IOM3 (marterials, mining etc) as a course accredited by the engineering council can be accredited by any of the bodys (I think).

I missed out on a 2.1 but a couple of %, but because I had an MEng the company who took me on didn't mind as I met the compteancies and did well at the assessment centre. A lot of places now want the MEng on your degree certificate.

So to sum it up, Im working in London on the underground in a Grad scheme for one of the companies and have great prospects throughout the Grad scheme and afterwards, and they push you through the IMECHE hoops as well. Salary ain't bad either :)

Keep at it, a 2.2 BEng would be pretty crappy to have on your CV and you will have a hard time finding a job, but an MEng really does mean a lot more !
 
thanks yea i was leaning towards sticking it and go for the masters and just knuckle down hard. what can i expect in my 4th year.. i.e. lectures/ research? a mate said that theres about 2 months (or 2 weeks but unlikely) of lectures and then the rest is research for the year with another dissertation. it probably changes from uni to uni but just to get a general idea.
 
I had standard lectures with modules etc. Then 1/3 of the year was a group development project. 5 of us built a portable compressed air cannon to fire golf balls at greens and bunkers 100-200 yards away whilst replicating amateur and pr0 spin.

Awesome project :D

4th year is a lot of work, but not significantly harder than 3rd year.

Wouldn't go as far as to say that! I'm doing well (although not in Engineering! Turned out halfway through the course I didnt like it but carried on, no doubt my Uni being what it is helped too!)

Go for the Masters mate, from my experience and from what my friends who went on to do the MEng, as its a LOT more focussed on application depending on what you do its easier than the 3rd year (which for me was a shed load of physics and maths :( ).

Go for it, a 2.2 MEng is better than a 2.2 BEng.

I think maybe you should do the Meng and work your backside off to improve your grade, I have just finished my second year of a Beng in Mechanical Engineering and have handed in the form to transfer to the Meng programme a s I think it is really worth the extra year. My mate got a pass for his degree, not even an honours degree in elec eng from manchester uni. He had a job within 2 months of graduation. He is soon to achieve chartered status too, although he did graduate 6 years ago.
 
Is your MEng course acredited by the relevant institutions? I only did the BEng (albeit sandwich) as the MEng wasnt acreddited. No regrets though so far but maybe it will bite me if i ever want to become chartered but from what Ive seen it doesnt make a huge difference in your typical design office.
 
go for the masters.

as mentioned earlier its required to get charted. you will have to mess around with matching courses to get charted.

most good company's only require a 2.2 Meng anway. I got a 2.2 by a stupidly small margin, does my company care?? NO!! and who is now going to give two hoots about it with the responsibility and experience I now have.

chartership is important, its the only thing that differentiates us form the people who fix your boiler.
