I bought a new case for an old motherboard that my sister was having trouble with because I wasn't aware of what was entirely wrong. Having spent the last 2 hours checking every part, I've come to the conclusion that it's the motherboard.

What I've done
Swapped both the RAM sticks into each socket
Unplugged everything bar the CPU and RAM
Turned it on without RAM to get the beeps and yes, it beeped
Swapped the CPU with an old socket A one I have
Changed the PSU

It's an Aopen Vkm400-ams so it's pretty old. I don't really want to have to buy a new mobo just because this one doesn't work. All the other components work. When I turn it on, sometimes I get the POST beep and everything is all good. Most of the time though, the system speaker makes a short click sound, everything has power but nothing happens. No POST, no display, just nothing. Any ideas?

Take the battery out for 10 mins (and put the kettle on! :D) and turn off the power at the mains.

Remove all add on cards apart from the graphics card (unless its on board graphics of course :D)

Put one stick of RAM in the slot furthest away from the CPU then replace the battery.

Plug power connectors back in and try that.

:)

Hmmm as in the little mobo battery? I won't get shocked or anything will I?

Yea it's onboard graphics, it's just a little box that's my backup PC so it's nothing amazing. Brb in 15 mins then :D

Yep - unplug your power connector on the MOBO after you switch off the mains.

Hit the power on button on your case before you remove the MOBO connector to discharge the capacitors in your PSU. If you unplugged at the mains (wall socket) first, you should see the fans "twitch" as the last drop of power is exhausted from the PSU.

Then remove the battery.

You won't get a shock unless you do this in the bath :D

Kettles on - back in 10 mins :D

Make sure mb isn't shorting out on the case (by taking it out not sure if there is any other way of seeing if it is shorting out) i have never had that happen but some people have.

Definatly not shorting out as sometimes it does boot and all is green and wonderful. If it was shorting, I'd expect a few bands and maybe some smoke too :D

Just turned it on after putting the battery back and the same thing. A small click and no POSTing or anything to suggest that it's working :(
