Fully synthetic oil

All depends really. Only reason you need to change oil is either due to it shearing down/becoming soot loaded so that the viscometrics have changed or the fact it is full of acid and the detergent 'base' has been used up. Base is there to neutralise acids etc.

The better oils are either synthetic base (assuming the same additive pack used) for longer drain intervals and better oxidation stability. Or better additive packs regardless of base oil for engine protection etc.

Personally I am comfortable with 9,000 mile intervals. Anymore in road use is an overkill, a better oil will offer better protection and for what it costs Vs the amout of fuel you burn in that period I definately think it is worth the premium just for piece of mind. OEM oil filters are also a must.

People love to **** off Magnatec for it not being 'fully synthetic' but the wear performance in Industry tests where camshaft wear is measured is miles better than any other oil. Ive seen plenty of competitor results which I cannot disclose for obvious reasons, but let's just say it is 10 times better than some stuff out there.

why cant you disclose the information? youll be doing people a favour and "bigging up" your employer

Sorry to be o/t, but is it better to use the best oil possible, and stick to 10 oil changes, or use a cheaper oil and change every 5/6k?

Bigger Oil change frequency with a lower quality oil is more beneficial than using expensive oils with less changes.

Perhaps you can offer me advice - I had an Inspection 1 in August. This was about 3-4k miles ago and I've still got a good 3 lights left, basically the car is estimating it will be at least another year and a half or so before it requires its next scheduled service at BMW.

I've figured it might be prudent to change the oil and filter this August anyway and then proceed with BMW servicing as normal when it becomes due.

What do you think?

I would - after all, if you were on fixed servicing of 10000miles, you would still change it yearly even if you only did 6000 miles.

Whatever.

We dont make marketing claims against specific oils for legal reasons, I am hardly going to say on an internet forum. Im not bigging anyone up.

Leave it in. That oil won't have even done anything yet, its fully synthetic and will last that long no problem.

Really? It's only 33 quid at National... I dont like the idea of 2.5 years between oil changes.

Don't BMW tell you to get the car serviced after two years if the computer hasn't yet prompted you?

Change it then. Up to you at the end of the day. It shouldn't be in for over 2 years though - I thought the service computer would say this?

Under 10,000km (Approx 6250 miles)

Calculation of the Service Interval covers almost all operating situations. However, if the car is driven very little (Well under 10,000km per year) you should have the engine oil changed once a year, since it ages regardless of the actual distance covered. You should also take this opportunity to have the body inspected for damage, for instance from stones flung up from the road.

Guess it does just need a simple oil change, ie not part of the main schedule/stamped history. Will get that done and have it serviced as normal with BMW next year.
