Leaving my current job (supermarket shelf stacker) been there almost 3 years.

Handed in my notice today saying ill work the notice period of a week.

The problem being i am starting new job next wedensday.
Another thing is that i am supposed to be workin 1-10 tomorow, but really dont want to and have other things to do.

If i dont work the notice what are the consequences and should i just not go back, have more important stuff to do tomorow tbh.

Anyone been in a similair situation where they just didnt bother working it or going back?

Pulled a sickie on tuesday there which they were not happy about and i was obviously fine when i went in today so would be tough going back sunday, mon, tue and thursday being on bad terms with the manager.

Also took too much holiday for this year so far, get paid at 12:00 tonight so they cant take anything back if i dont work notice.

Arent you paid a week in lue

When I had to leave early I was just honest and asked them if it was ok with them, amazingly they said they could cope without me lol

Not any more, paid what we work, only changed a few months ago. I'm a bit late for that having said i will work my notice, though somethings came up and i really don't want to work tomorrow.

Whos will stack the shelves? We are still awaiting the answer.

I dont get it?

lol he was being sarky. Just tell them I have to start the job on wednesday so tuesday is the last day I can work, end of or it does sound like you can just bolt it and duck behind a bush if you ever see them again :p

Why didn't you give in your notice earlier than?

Why can't you 'just not be bothered tbh' - I take it this lack of work ethic has suddenly just come about because of your new job? :/

When I handed my notice to my old workplace they told me to leave after the 1st week of working it because I was late 15 mins due to traffic and they would not accept it as a valid excuse for being late (yes they were anal about stuff like that).

I left that very day after quickly saying by to most of the team.

Worked out well as I had 3 weeks of freedom (you may remember the thread :p)

I was in birmingham for the past 2 days so it was not possible to hand in my notice until first thing this morning, which i did.

I think you'l find i never said i 'just not be bothered tbh', i have things i would like to do tomorrow and had only agreed last week to cover the shift to help them out tomorrow.

There is no lack of work ethic, last summer i worked my new job as a temporary contract in which i worked full time there and 16 hours contract in my supermarket job, the reason im not doing that this time is because my contract has increased.

The fact i have been there almost 3 years shows that i am a somewhat loyal employee (possibly too loyal for the role) and that i feel that i don't get the same respect back so have now come to the point where i feel its time to get my own back by not turning up tomorrow.

The only thing stopping me from doing so is that a recent job application i filled out required a reference from my past 2 employers, which could cause a problem in the future, is this normal procedure when applying for jobs?

My work notice period is 4 weeks but if I have a job to go into I don't need to work it.

My bf pulled a sickie on his last day of his notice and they demanded the sick pay off of him as he didn't attend a back to work interview as he no longer worked there.

I think it really depends on where you work. You can always explain to them that you have a new job and need to finish your notice early.

Though, I'd say you've left it a bit late if you're supposed to be working tomorrow. I'd go in. Your things that are "better to do" don't seem to be important it's like you just cba.

Edit: Also, they could give you a bad reference and when for a few hours of your time it can be avoided it seems a bit stupid to me.

Tbh mate consequences for future employment might be a bit iffy if you've been there 3 years. You're likely to have to use them for some sort of reference in the future and it won't do you any favours if they give you a bad one due to not working your notice period.
I'd be inclined to say just work it up until you have to start your new job - Then pull a sicky for the rest of the shifts. At least they can't (legally) give you a bad reference then.
I've been in similar situations to this and I've just upped sticks and left - But not for companies I've been with for 3 years :P Even ended up getting paid for not showing up for two weeks from one employer :D

Phoned up this morning and said i wasn't coming back, had intended to work my notice period but something had came up and i won't be able to.

Hopefully the right decision was made, time will tell.

sorry to sound dumb but 'how does one 'hand in their notice' :) because on day im gonna have to do this and i have no idea what to write on one
