The gas board has been digging up the road on my street for a few weeks now making a right mess and a big inconvenience. But I can live with that.

I got a knock on the door this morning, the guy asked if the homeowner was in but I said he could speak to me instead. Basically because we have had an extension on the house the gas pipes run under the house now and this is not allowed. To solve this problem they want to move the gas meter to the front of the house and put new gas pipes in, however its not just a quick job.

They want to dig up the drive to put new gas pipes in and then feed the pipes through the front wall of the house, then because the current gas is coming in at the back of the house they need to change all the gas pipes inside. To do this they want to dig up the downstairs flooring (it's a solid floor) to put new pipes in to join to the existing ones at the back OR Run them up the front wall and put them under the upstairs flooring.

He also said it needs to be done within the next 3 weeks, and we either have it done or they cut the gas off.

I already have to park on the drive as there is no space on the road to park, so if they dig up the drive I will have to find another street to park on. And then they want to rip the house to bits...

I take it you aren't the homeowner. Have you informed him/her? They ought to be made aware of the work before the event. Not that they can object to the work that's needed.

btw, how did you get planning for the extension ?

Well we got planning permission and so did everyone else thats had a similar extension on the street, they also have to have the same sort of work done.

They are going to struggle to put things back as they were as allot of the stuff in the house is not available in the UK.

Concrete and carpet is not sold in the UK ?

Surely this is the sort of thing that should have been taken into consideration when the extension was built? You really need to contact the owner, but it doesn't sound like you have much choice.

But surely we shouldn't have been giving planning permission in the first place? Or at-least have been informed that there may be future issues with the way the gas enters the house.

I would have thought that would be the case. I guess it depends how recently the extension was added though. Health and safety regulations change all the time, and so it's entirely possible that this is a newer requirement of the gas company.

I'd make sure you have pictures of it and get it in writing - also get it in writiing that they will not use 'cheaper' alternatives.

I'd check the law as they can't cut off our gas as it's your basic human rights (go see the CAB perhaps).

The gas board are about to spend 14 weeks standing around smoking, reading the Sun and yelling at women in short skirts down my road. Sorry, did it come out like that, I meant they are spending 14 weeks carrying out improvement work to the gas supply.
