South Korea is, for the most part, a developed country. They have, for example, the highest internet useage per-capita of any country in the world.
North Korea (often called 'the hermit nation') is a complete mess. Autocratic rule, Stalinist philosophy, cult-like worship of their leader to make Saddam's Iraq look like a free utopia, annual mass famine, utter poverty for 98% of the population, etc etc
I doubt there is a bigger gulf anywhere in the world between countries with a geographical border.
Erm, i always thought that was iceland, no joke. And as for developing, yep the government gave some rich families to develop big companies known as 'chaibols' but its actually a bit depressing for many south koreans and their style of life is now going down hill again due to it, as i've been taught. Its kind of getting a feeling of being communist, but only job wise.
He went to North Korea? Are you sure? I know that the North korean Goverment does organise some tourism, but that you travel in groups on pre-set routes, accomanied throughout by one or more Goverment officials whose line-of-sight you are not allowed to leave.

My friend just got back from North Korea last week. They had a guide with them and they were only allowed to take pictures of certain things, i.e. they were not allowed to take pictures of things that made the country look bad (poverty, empty streets etc).
He has a load of pics online, i'll ask him if I can link them here tonight.
There are pictures of 5/6 year old kids performing like robots with a permanent smile on thier faces, and with the girls wearing make-up - it looked cute but very scary at the same time!
