Okay I have finally got access to some cash and have been offered a Pug 206 GTI for around the £2500 mark, its got 69k on the clock and is a 2001 V.

Basically anyone driven one? What to look out for on the car? and is it a good car to get, reviews seem to like the ride etc...

Cheers for any comments in advance :)

I don't know if the 180 is different to a normal one but it is a very firm ride, too firm to be comfortable. Cheap plastics and rattlely interiors and not all that quick.

Terrible in what way?

Creaks, rattles, cheap build quality, looks like a banger, is a banger, etc?

BUT OMG THEY WERE AMAZING TO DRIVE IN 1989! ;)

(That last line was only semi serious, I realise they are still great fun today but when not exploiting the terrific handling it is simply a crappy old Peugeot).

At least the 205 GTI has the excuse of being old for it's shortcomings. What's the 206 GTI's excuse?

its bound to be good the advertising says so !

I'd look at something else to be honest.

I like mine, its a *nice* car to drive, but it doesn't excite me at all.

As with all of my cars, i keep it VERY clean, and it does look nice, but you'll get to a point after a very short period of owning it and wonder why the hell Peugeot stamped GTi on a 138bhp car.

Handles ok, interior i actually like, steering wheel is great compared to most, and you quickly adjust to the pedal arrangement (I'm size 10), it does need a lot of encouragement to go anywhere though, compared to my old XE Astra its quite lazy.

Either way, i would be looking at Xsara VTS's and the like, much more car for the money in terms of peformance.

Poor Quality Plastics, bad build quality, not very good performance, bad reliability.

Not a fan :p

A Focus is a much better car.

Interior is fine to me, dash isn't hard plastic, more of a soft rubbery one, hardly hear any creaking inside the car at all. Build quialty, again, i've nto seen any of my front wings fall off :p

Performance i'll agree on, it certainly is lacking a bit in that department, and would have its pants pulled down by most if not any of its competitors in the market, however mines not let me down once yet. Ok, so i've only owned it a couple of months but i've put a good few thousand miles on it and it was previoulsy parked up doing nothing. Sometimes people are quick to read or hear about one persons back luck, and tar the rest with the same bursh :)

Had one on hire in france, it was quite new and apart from it didn't breakdown i wasn't a fan :)

Shame really the 206 should have been a great car, alas it wasn't to be :(

The 206 gti 180 will go much better than the standard gti. I still dont think they made the handling much better on the 180 version though. I dont understand why they put a gti badge on the 206 either as 138hp isn't really gti territory in my eyes too.

The 180 isn't a slouch though as I have had a good play with one in my 306 gti6 and they go pretty well (in a straight line) The Xsara VTS has the same engine as a 306 gti6 but only has 5 gears. As said though the VTS is a lot of car for the money!

180 isn't all that much better than the 138 in terms of real performance, 1 second quicker to 60 isn't really much of an improvement, theres lots of people with 138's on 206Info that have had a few bits done to the 138 (Exhaust, decent induction and remap) and aren't far off the 180, Peugeot strangled the engine to get as much as they could out of it.
