4850 Crossfire Scaling Incredible?

Is it just me or is the crossfire scaling of these cards looking fantastic? I mean, just been looking at the Guru3d review, and yeah I know we can't judge it on one review, but figures speak for themselves and we're getting awesome performance scaling from this, something that you don't really see so well with Sli? a lot of the figures are showing 100% scaling, which is unheard of from what I've seen from the last few years... and okay, we're still getting the odd lockup and a few quirks, but man, for $400 you can have a rig that's easily up there with G260/G280 from what I've read... looks like they have a serious winner on their hand Ati this round, and even I for one, am seriously thinking of defecting and going ATi when all cards are released...

Cheers Pug ;)

Agreed.

It's excellent performance, but............it doesn't work at all in some games, so if those happen to be your fave games then you only get single card performance. :(

It's such a shame. I'd go for two 4850's otherwise.

4850 Benchies

These benchies are just a taster, out of the box plugged into a random rig and then run the bench marks. Q6600 at 3.6GHz (400x9), 4GB Corsair Dominator, Abit Quad GT. Hope to do some more based on one of our new systems shortly. ;)

Pefect example, that crossifre rig there... I mean my 8800GT straight out the box did 14.5k, clocked did 15.3k... however in SLi I only get 16.9k... which is WAYYYY behind these... I know benchmarks are synthetic, BUT, this is looking fantastic for ATi at the moment...

Have to admit, this is WAYYYY more impressive than any G260/G280 reviews I've seen... I can only think what's going to happen when they're overclocked and when the 4870's come out for what, £200 notes and crossfired? It's for once, got me seriously thinking about rebuilding and I've only had this rig 2 months rofl

Cheers Pug

Its a pity though that with such reasonably priced cards 3 and four way crossfire doesnt scale anywhere near as well (according to reviews)

Dual crossfire is a winner though , or certainly looks like it (unless the noise turns out to be horrendous)

The 4850 seems to get limited somehow in most 3d '06 benchmarks. In '06 it can come out worse than the GT despite beating the 9800 GTX in most games.

Basically. Some reviews show the GTX280 only getting a thousand points or so over the 9800 GTX in '06. It's about as relevant to games as running CUDA superpi on your graphics card.

Now I see those benchies I am definetly waiting for 4870 and the x2 version as my 3dmark is better with my tri crossfire and my Vantage scores are higher.
Very impressive for budget cards though.

You never know,

But youv just made me realise, wheres 3 and 4x crossfire, OCUK get a amd rig and slap in 4 of these cards for us and see what it can do :p

These cards aren't optimised for a 3 year old benchmark that runs at 1284x1024 (or whatever the resolution is)... none of the Sli scores OR single card solutions WILL SHOW MUCH IMPROVEMENT IN 06'... it's in GAMES that it counts surely?

Dont' get me wrong, I'm a benchmark whore myself, however, I couldn't give a cr@p if the 3dmark06 sores were 1k, but I'm hitting silly hight in all games... ot sure why you think they're that important?

Also, we've never seen 100% crossfire scaling before as far as I can remember and now we are, SO, unitl we see QUAD or Triple Crossfire, lets not judge it on past implementations, as I wouldn#t be surprised if Ati/AMD have finally got the drivers sorted and if they have.... well...

Cheers Pug

Looks good and game performance seems to be up as much as synthetic tests which is a good sign.

but has anybody got any results for a lot more games than just the ones ATI perform good in? like open gl games which nvidia are usually a bit better in

Have a look at the review on the guru3d site. Crossfire doesn't work at all in some games.

Took a look, good results seeings as how cheap the cards are.

Will the games that dont work in xfire ever be supported? whats the reason some games dont seem to scale at all anyway? i know certain engines love xfire etc for whatever reason though

erm on the site it shows GRID up past the GTX 280 in xfire

Err below the GTX280 and above the 9800GTX but they never showed just one 4850 running and you will get the same result.

Go to GRID's website and look at FAQ and they tell you why GRID doesn't work with either SLI or xfire.

That's the million dollar question for me. If all games were guaranteed supported then I'd of ordered 2 4850's this afternoon.

Well the performance of the 4850 is so strong that should a game, like GRID, not support xfire, does it matter when the ones that do show a 50-100% performance boost?

A single 4850 is still getting 53fps at 1920 x 1200 in GRID and only 13fps behind the GTX.

I'd still be annoyed that I wasn't getting twice the performance some of the time. Especially having shelled out twice as much.

Nope, SLI and crossfire aren't for me unless I get twice the performance all of the time.

Oh, and what's a Sumsung 500gb? :p
