well, I may well live to regret it, but I've actually followed advise from [TW]Fox, which for once wasn't to buy another mondeo.

I've just bought a 51 plate Volvo S60. 130k on the clock, its had tender loving car a volvo specialist for its entire life (that ends now, hope it doesn't plan revenge), and the paint work is slightly scratched along one side. The artist, Kim, kindly signed it aswell.

Pick it up tomorrow morning. Photos may be provided once I've had a chance to correct the paint work.

We'll now see if [TW]Fox is correct that the car will break down all the time, but I'd love it anyway. Its got cup holders so thats a good start, on the loving it part, but I did break the cover trying to close it.....

Guess it didn't costs much then? Mondeo's 9/10 are brillaint bangernomics ;)

Good to crash it, Volvo saves your life, then get a Nice Mk3 ;)

Welcome to the flawed, expensive, yet loveable world of executive saloons :D

Volvo...........executive saloon...........Volvo..........exec........nope, not working for me.

The S60 was always a Mercedes E Class/BMW 5 Series rival. Ok, it didn't come anywhere near close to either but thats like saying a Perodua Nippa isn't a supermini because its nowhere near as good as a Fiesta.

Its been almost a year to the day since i bought my 05 plate S60 D5 S which is my third car since i started driving. I think its a great car for the money i paid for it and have racked up 30000 trouble free miles on it, i would quite happily have another volvo as my next car.

So is a Passat an executive saloon as that's where VW pitch it? What about a Mondeo? Same class of car as the Passat so whatever the Passat is, so must the Mondeo be.

You went for a 2.0TS?

Seriously, totally fail. You can't complete the exec saloon experience without at least 200bhp.

I know

<excuses>I've only been driving a year, its still much faster than the Mondeo, and the insurance aren't too happy about me getting the Mondeo torched, and I'll get a real car in a year or two, honest</excuses>

S40 / V40 are in the same class as the Passat the S60 isn't.

OK, so it doesn't matter where the manufacturers pitch the car, it's your perception of it that matters right?

My perception of the S60 is it's a large, family saloon. Not an executive car by any means.

The S80 is the only Volvo that I would class as an executive car.

I do agree with this, the volvo range was a bit weird for a while, with the S40 being the 'Small Car' the S60 seems to sit between classes.

Another view is the S60 is a Compact Executive and the S80 is a Large Executive.

You know thats a very good point, thats about 5 Series sized isnt it?

I guess that makes the S60 more of a 3 Series type car.

Volvo are very weird with their cars, the S80 goes up against the 5 Series and maybe even slightly above it nearing the 7 Series (has features which suggest being a passenger in the car is its motive), however the S60 sits between Compact Executive and Executive, while the S40 sits just below Compact Executive. They're kind of in the middle, which is weird. and has contributed to their low sales

Man, everyone is bricking it about buying new motors at the mo :)

Yeah, cos all the idiots out there are terrified by rising fuel costs so are consquently chopping anything and everything in to buy a C2 Diesel or something equally dull. Mate of mine did this - bought a BRAND NEW C2 diesel becuase..."it's only £35 to tax a year and does 60mpg..." He does around 10k/year and is spending about £250/month on the finance...PROPER cheap motoring...
