Sony Ericsson X1

sorry dude, i was initially wetting myself over this, but after looking through many preview reports, and the videos on youtube, i think that the X1 has a serious "lag" issue. The windows look to be sluggish and slow. Everything seems to take very long to load.

OTOH, the omnia looks to be very quick and responsive. In a mobile, when i press a button it has to be responsive, load times shouldnt really exist. Unless the X1 ships soon, and fixes the menu lag, i'll probably be on a new 18 month contract in the next few weeks with an omnia..... or iphone 3g

you're clearly not very familiar with mobile beta sfotware, frankly the fact they had one working at all on those youtube videos is pretty impressive.

I was working at SE from just before the K750 launched until just before the K800 launched and I saw pretty much everything in beta before launch and they all ran like absolute ****

The most striking example was the W900i I saw working with what appeared to be W800 software so none of the active swivel worked, it crashed every 2 minutes etc etc.

Basically what I'm saying is (and no I'm not pro SE in particular I have a P1i and an iphone atm) don't write off a handset from viewing a beta software release.

Exactly, really annoys me to no end when people slate something that isnt even in final production.

Anyways as for the X1, you will be lucky to have it by August...latest ive heard is about Sept/Oct. Orange have confirmed that they will be carrying it on their network.

Ill probably buy one sim free as i normally do with phones...just cant be bothered with all that de-branding and unlocking rubbish that networks are so enamoured with.

Personally I'm not desperately keen on windows mobile but I think there's a fair chance I'll give one a go. I've had a p800, p900, p910, p990 and now a p1i (by FAR my favourite of the lot) so I am on a bit of a collision course to have one of these as long as its not crazy money.

My only concern would be if like the W960 etc it just doesn't get picked up by the networks, I have a few routes to getting handsets but if the networks don't get behind it it won't cross my path.

If you READ carefully, you will notice that there was qualifier that says that "unless....". Which is a qualifier that will allow me to change my position when it is out.

I dont think it is unreasonable to "slate" the pre-production version, since that is all we have to go on for now. Further, the qualifier does allow exception that things may change. Besides, how do you know what extent improvements will be made?

It really annoys ME to no end when people dont READ carefully and SLATE something incorrectly.....

Sometimes phones are like a Tony Hart painting. Everything looks like a confusing mess until right at the last minute everything comes together beautifully. A lot of pre-production phones are running in debug mode, which can severely affect performance.

It's still easy enough to guess which phones won't come together nicely at the last moment though.

We shall see.....

what? whether I have first hand experience? lol

I can't guarantee it won't be a dog, look at the P990 and for that matter the N95, both very flakey on release. My point is you should never ever judge preproduction software.

These things don't sit around in offices for months ready, finished and waiting to be released. They get released the moment they are deemed ready and thats often a bit too early so a release months before the slated release is going to be a shocker tbh.

Yes. But i think that it was still a poor decision to allow such a poor pre-production model "out". After all, as you probably know, most people dont have this magical "first hand experience". Most wont even consider that things will change markedly between the pre-prod and final.

Either way, it is a bad PR move, since almost every youtube video (with their thousands of hits) shows how much "menu lag" there is, and i suspect many (including me) would have been put off.

I didn't mention the poor menu lag etc in the videos I'd seen because I knew as mentioned all pre-production phones operating at a smart phone level start life like this and come launch are fine.

More importantly has anyone got any firm info on a release date?

Like i said your looking at either sept or oct this yr...again thats not guaranteed and god knows when the networks will be carrying it. Although i read somewhere that Orange will be carrying it, dont know about other networks.

A lot depends on how much they want to charge for the thing too (SE that is) I think thats what killed the P1i and W960.

I have to say the P1i I have is easily the best P series out there but it just never took off for some reason and i expect it was a commercial one.

yea, it has to be very competitively priced. Cant be too far off the iphone and the others or pple wont even bother to look at it.

I was meaning the trade price tbh, SE have a habit of making their decent phones too expensive to the networks so they never get picked up.

W900, W960, P1i and P990 to a certain extent all flopped in a big way partly due to total lack of network support.

Its probably a good reason why a lot of their mid range stuff is soo poorly accepted, why push a K770 (a what? did anyone buy one?) when it costs more to the network than a 6300? Regardless of which may technically be the better handset

I think we are talking of different levels on many fronts. I bow to your superior "inside" knowledge and any "first hand" experience.

But frankly, I and many other end-users, dont really care how expensive the "trade price" is to the network. I only care about how much it will cost ME ultimately. I accept that it may be linked, and if they make a profit, good for them, if the network makes a loss, that's no matter to me. Neither does any of the people actually buying it care how much has "improved" from the pre-production. We only care about the END product in the box.

I think you misunderstand me, I'm not trying to show off or anything.. my point is that if it doesn't stack up for them they don't sell it... period. The only reasons a network doesn't list a handset are either some exclusivity deal a-la iphone or because regardless of what offer they put it on it won't make them enough money for them to bother going through the exercise of approving it.

I do think there's a fair chance the X1 might wind up being the most awesome handset SE have produced and then for it to only be available sim free because the networks/retailers can't afford to buy it and subsidise it to a sensible price.

I don't give a monkeys if the network makes money either but if they decide not to give it away free then you're probably looking at the thick end of £600 sim free I reckon.
