Got\a huge poster of that. Over the Rockies I think..er..the range in N America it always gets people's attention when they walk into my room.

I've actually got a double spread of it in one of my aircraft books lying around and from what I can recall, I do not think I have seen a better pic of it than the one in my book. Wish I knew where I put it now!

If you stop calling it a eurofighter and start calling it the Typhoon it's a hard choice, the Typhoon makes for one HELL of a show. I have touched an SR-71, while sanding on a Concorde.

Not really a fair comparsion...the SR-71 is a reconnaissance aircraft.

It still has wings and flies.

One is awesome, the other smokes pink cigars ;)

Quit whinging about the poll options - this thread was borne out of a discussion in RealLife(tm) and has no intentions of being "fair".

It's a bit like comparing an 8400GS with a GTX 280.

The eurofighter seems to have been marred with problems, all its specs (speed max distance, payload etc) are worse, its costs have overun by billions :O, even been the political problems with companies forcing countries into contracts for them.

True but unlike the SR71 it is still in service :p

What am I supposed to do with an SR-71?

Run away from everyone whilst taking highly detailed pictures of them?

Typhoon please, I can kill things with that.

But imagine the super secret replacement the US has for it.

I have and I have also been wondering whether that would do a turn that would need to take up a 100 miles of sky ;)
Also its been mentioned that the SR71 is not armed and presumably need quite a length of runway to get off the ground unlike the Eurofighter.
Indeed, it would make more sense to have a high performance fighter with the same capabilities as the Blackbird-and the nearest there is to this would be the F22:
excluding the Aurora as its specifications are unknown.

Yeah... a satellite. ;)

From what i understand spy satellites can take upto 24 hours to take pictures from any specific location, and their motions can be tracked.

At mach 3 and just a wisper on the radar i think their are significant advantages with having reconnaissance aircraft as well as satellites.

Fighter vs reconnaissance is unfair, should have been F22 tbh.

personally I'd take an f22 Raptor, sure an sr-71 is fast but pretty boring (all you can do is climb then go fast)and you have to refuel mid flight every time you wanted to go fast, raptor/fighter, you can zip around at low level and pull of crazy loops etc.

even the lower mach will seem much faster at 50ft than mach 3 at a few thousand.

Plus the sr-71 has been vulnerable to missiles for a while now.
