Ive just been thinking...

Would you say that World of Warcraft has been a bit TOO successful?

I know it sounds silly, but from personal experience, when i was hooked on WoW, i played nothing else. When i did read about a game that was hailed as being great.. Ie, the witcher, bioshock etc. I totally ignored them.

I quit WoW last november, but at the minute ive been tempted by another MMO.

I think MMOs are going to make game sales of other genres a lot lower than pre WoW/successful mmo days.

If wow has 10million regular players, thats 10 million people who probably arent giving any other games a good shot.

These MMO games might be the future... not just for themselves, but for gaming on the PC alltogether :(

please dont come to eve :p

I think you're overestimating how many people get so sadly addicted. Most will still play other games, I believe.

I dont think its a case of pure addiction, i think its personal choice...

i would say if a person has 2hrs spare, and they are a regular MMO player, they will spend that two hours trying to better their character.

They probably wouldnt spend that time progressing through a nice story driven game with an end in sight :).

I might be over estimating the effect, but id like to see some sales figures or something on pc games in general since Wow took off, because everyone has gotta admit, its been ridiculously successful.

I think he has a point, it's nothing to do with sad addiction, I've played both Guild Wars and WoW and whilst I was an active GW player and a WoW subscriber I barely gave any other games a chance, whenever I played I played one or the other..and yes, I did leave the house to do other things (The Off License is hardly going to walk to me now is it?)

well no, people will play the better game (for them).

Well if thats the case, with something like 10m subscribers (dunno if im right, read this somewhere), then wow must be "the better game"

its not the case of whats a better game tefal, it seems to be the game that people would rather spend their time playing.

Better isnt really coming into it when people are hooked on something.

The Witcher is one of the best games i played in years, Half life etc were... however if I was hooked on one game, because it was giving me items etc from the time i was spending on it. then i would have totally overlooked "better" games.

well no, people will play the better game (for them).

But a lot of the best games that aren't online people will play for say 20-70 hours then move on, if people play something open ended then they could carry on indefinately without buying another game, I know I did for a couple of years.

Not due to any addiction, just because when I had gaming time, I had things I wanted/enjoyed doing on an MMORPG. Other games are short lived in comparison.

Think u got a point there. I started playing Lotro bout 10 weeks ago and 80% of my gaming time since i made friends/joined kin i spent playing lotro with occasional race in gtr2 or test drive. What makes me play it rather than other games is the MM part of mmo. Tho atm theres nothing out there that i want to play. Waiting for witcher patch and new Colonization to come out.

I see what you mean. TF2 is my addiction currently, so GRID, Alone in the Dark, Thief 3 and COD4 are not getting much attention at the moment.

i don't think it's just MMOs. If you look at the hours that go into modding and the playing of mods or other MP games like CS it's inevitable that it's at the expense of new games. It's cool that people have found a game they love (like Starcraft) and it's still pushing their buttons after all this time but I suppose it's harming the industry in a way. the worry, for me, is that publishers are going to look at ways of shortening the SP games and limiting modablility. Devs probably won't as they don't have to worry about selling their next product for at least another year but EA will want you to finish that game quickly and be onto the next purchase. Since i'm increasingly relying on mods to provide the experience i crave (Oblivion) that's not good.

Biggest bluff/play on words in computer gaming history.

I said i wasnt sure if i was right about this, Whats the situation? is the figure just counting all accounts made, and not just active accounts?

Either way, i know that it has a huge number of active players. More than any other online game there is.

That is the very definition of a better game...

I wouldnt agree at this, id say its a more addictive game, but it doesnt make it better.

Games like Yoshis Island, Half Life, Mario Kart, Goldeneye... they are all better games in my opinion, but obviously they dont hold the same longevity.

If hours makes the game better, then WoW is the best game ive played, because i lost about 150-200days on it..

But i dont rate it as the better game

If hours makes the game better,

I never mentioned hours played, just that if a person would rather play game A than B then A is a better game for that person.

A games merit is not based on ingenuity uber graphics or anything other than enjoyment/desire to play.

Fair points dude,

I personally felt that WoW had became more of a habit rather than just a game i had enjoyment/desire to play.

Since stopping playing it i have appreciated other games, and ive completed some and thought. "woah, that was great".

i feel WoW and other addictive games stop a lot of people trying out games in the way they would have years ago
