Who has the best army in the world?

We (UK) have the most modern up to date system. Our Astutes, Type 45 Destroyers, Chinook helicopters, and intense army training would give the Americans a nice fight any day.

Not to mention we're getting two new 60,000 ton air craft carriers.

I find the Type 45s abit dissapointing just because budget cuts have meant they lost a lot of ability... they have no surface to surface capability except from sea skua's fired by heli (and 4 of those couldn't even sink a argi gunboat in the falklands). Hopefully they will add launchers for harpoon or similar in refit later.

I guess there main role is gonna be protecting our new carriers from air attack..

yeah but one full US carrier group would probbably decimate our navy :p

although in nuclear war my money would be on Russia, bigger missiles bigger war heads and larger first strike capacity, they can take out 80% of Americas launch facilities in the first wave America can't get close to that.

SO even though every city would be gone Russia would still get in a few more shots, then has the larger land to avoid radiation.

Although in a nuclear war i guess you just nuke the enemy's power plants (nuclear) and they do the same and the whole world gets covered in in masses of radiation :(

Isn't that what Frigates are for?

Plus as we've seen with loads of other projects, some capabilities get added later.

There is no disputing they are extremely capable and advanced warships though! Most modern warship in the world at the mo!

they have got the mounting points for the harpoons they just haven't fitted them, it also has its 4 inch gun.

The only trouble with air craft carriers is ... like putting all your eggs in one basket..... 1 torpedo and you will lose not only a super expensive ship with god knows how many personel but also x amount of aircraft .... and i dont think a submarine would find it difficult to hit something the size of an aircraft carrier.

Nope. Our Type 45 Destroyers docked in Portsmouth would be able to detect their carrier group setting sale from New York (that's how sensitive our radar is). We send a few Astute class Subs there, torpedo the bunch of them. Come back home just in time for crumpets and Corrie.

That is why you have carrier groups.

edit: it seems france now have pipped our 2nd place budget size, they don't count as all their budget is spent working out ways to retreat and not fight.....as proved throughout history (they don't even deserve to be in NATO imo)
Not quite. France include some police in their definition of "military" afaik :)

Would find it very difficult to get past the helicopters, plans, ships and submarines making up the fleet guarding the carrier though.

Even then it will take quite a bit more than a single torpedo to sink a aircraft carrier.

One thing to remember though, even though we are tiny on the world map we have the 2nd largest military budget AFAIK (certainly per capita), and the 2nd largest navy on the planet. When our new 2 * super carriers come online we'll be only country to posess them other than the USA. Not bad at all :). We also have probably the most advanced sub in the world, the new Astute class.. one of the best battle tanks in Challenger II, 2nd best fighter with Typhoon, one of the best Air defence destroyers with the new Type 45s.

All above makes me proud to be british..

Contrary to media hype, the British also have very good equipment. Challenger 2 tank is definately the best in the world!!

All of that means little really because regardless of our spending if we had to go to war we wouldn't be able to get there without the yanks helping us.

Lets say the argies took the falklands back again. How would we get there? Beg and borrow from the yanks thats how. We couldn't even get our troops to iraq and afganistan in numbers without the yanks.

If the Argies took back the falklands it would take us two years to get the equipment together to go beat them off it again.

Our air force is little more than a joke. Most of the maintenance is done on civilian bases or farmed out abroad which really wouldn't help us during a war.

Our transport aircraft are in tatters (c130k and J), most are on the ground being repaired. Or we have the frankly laughable tristar which is currently having half a billion spent on it having glass cockpit upgrades despite the aircraft needing to be sent to the scrappy.

Yeah we spend a lot on the budget but not in a good way.

People always bang the SAS drum but who hear really knows whether they are the best or just the usual media bull.

yeah very true I guess....

this is my fave ship at the moment, it just looks plain awesome...packs a good punch for a little ship as well.

You have to discount France's spending figures. They've spent the last 3 decades trying to mimic the UK way of spending.

France - 80% of spending goes on pen pushers and "desk soldiers", admin etc, 20% of fighting equipment.

UK - 80% goes on fighting equipment etc

what are the odds an astute can get through the massive defense around the carrier, and even then they only need to sale a few hundred miles from new york to hit that type 45 with a missile, (and vis versa, but the cairrer group as more anti missile defense)
