Vectra VXR

This is the standard elise, so worse handling cars with more grunt can make time back on the straights.

Which brings us to the Vectra. Just like the Astra VXR, Vauxhall think simply throwing power at it will mask the rest of the cars failings.

The Astra VXR handles well from what I understand. There seems to be a lot of hysteria about Vauxhalls here...

The Vectra VXR has been given good reviews by everyone except Top Gear. It has complicated electronics which help the handling hugely, which Clarkson turned off and then pronounced the handling as poor

i have no love for vauxhall but....

Frankly, I'm staggered at the Vectra's sheer ground-covering ability. The roads are dry, which levels the playing field, but even so, none of us would have expected the VXR to live with the final car of this foursome, BMW's superb 330i M Sport, let alone get stuck into the rally reps.

Are you trying to convince us or yourself? If you want it, buy it. You've obviously already made up your mind.

This, you shouldn’t need to justify your car purchase if it’s the one you want just buy it :D

It seems from reading every VX thread its gets derailed by the usual group.

So your sarcasm suggests you agree it was a stitch up. VX should have sued his arse for that - saying on national TV that the car is dangerous to drive.

It was an exceptional review showing nothing but fair, objective and balanced reporting.

The end is the best part when hes asked if driven as a normal person would on the roads would it be good? He drones on about something else because rather than give a non bias review, he has to "try" to be comedian.

Yea, right, fair enough. There is quite clearly something up with those figures, for example it was pouring with rain when the decent stuff went out. Unless you think a Volvo S60 is quicker round a track than an Aston Vanquish or a Lotus Elise.

# 1:34.9 – Ford Focus ST (foggy)
# 1:35.0 – Volvo S60 R
# 1:35.2 – Ferrari 575M Maranello (very wet)
# 1:35.3 – Vauxhall Vectra VXR
# 1:35.6 – Alfa Romeo 147 GTA
# 1:35.6 – Lotus Elise (very wet)

Why did you leave out the very wet part, MrLoL?

Oh, look at this: 1:34.5 – Ford Mondeo ST220 ;)

If you're going to spend more money, I'd look at a Mk2 Octavia vRS, the best option is by far the ST220, but the vRS is much better than a Vectra VXR.

using top gear reviews as any real basis on car judgement is retarded, it's a comedy show at best

Top Gear is a bit of good fun nowerdays, with a car basis. If it still had it's old, more serious format pre-revamp, it would never be in the same position it is now.

they sacrificed its credibility to get high ratings by making it appealing to an audience who don't even really care about cars

I'm probably more inclined to watch it now though, I'd rather use the net for hard information on cars than a TV show.

I prefer to watch the likes of jackass to see random car related sketches

the only bit of top gear worth watching is the stigs laps

The problem with Top Gear, the real problem, is the fact the vast majority of viewers I have come across seem to take everything they see at face value and simply soak it up as factual insights. Says more about this country more than anything I think..

You have your heart set on a vectra. Buy it. But dont come crying on here when you understeer into a ditch.

280Bhp through the front wheels of a heavy nosed 2.8 V6 on a pants chasis... Awesome.

I'm trying to partake in a debate, i dont feel a need to defend the car, but afterall thats why we come on this forum, for debate. I dont much care about what others say, whether or not i fork out the extra for the VXR, or go for the ST220 will decided between me and the mrs.

Cant help think though, that the only car i can buy that OcUK would approve of is a BMW ...

I got the powerlaps from

http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/show/powerlaps.shtml

which dont make any mention of whether they are wet laps or not as you can see. To be honest, im not bothered that the ST220 lapped it 0.8 seconds quicker, it is the better handling car.

But the fact that it was only 0.8 seconds quicker says its not the "dangerous barge uncapable of going round corners" that people are making out. its a FWD car with 280bhp. Its no supprise that you can overcome the limits of the chassis with that power. But frankly,i wouldnt have it any other way ...

driven it have we ?

Sorry, but you're going to have to be driving so fast, you'd be asking for it, to wind the VXR up in a ditch. I threw it round a tight roundabout at 40 in a 40 limit zone and it coped just fine without drama. Dont believe everything clarkson says ...

Twice as good as a 7k ST is it?

why does it have to quantifyably twice as good because its twice the price. I buy proper coca cola instead of 10p roller cola, but does that mean that proper coke has to taste 10 x as nice ?

True, maybe he wants to spend 5 figures on a Vectra because it says 56 on the number plate.

No i want to buy a nice car. I happen to like the vectra VXR which only comes in 55 and onwards. I test drove a 07 because thats what they had on the forecourt, i have every intention of finding the oldest example i can find, to save myself paying too much of the "newness premium" (of which the car i drove was a perfect example, 16k and 1 year old with 9k miles)

You do seem desperate to waste as much un-neccesary cash as possible on this next purchase for the biggest of irrational reasons you can think of so tbh the VXR seems fit for purpose.

Infact why buy a used one? Surely you want a brand new one!

Problem is fox, as your quote at the top reveals, car buying is a very strict and analytical process for you. You find the best car in its class, then proceed to buy the oldest example you can find with as many miles as possible, so long as its been well looked after.

Buying anything else is completely unfathomable to you. I'll refrain from making suggestions as to why i think you cant understand why anybody would want to buy another than 6k 02 Plate ST220 or a BMW in my situation, but suffice to say, your car buying habits reveal certain things about your personality.
