** The Official ATI RV770/RV700 Series Review/Overclocking Thread **

My 2 Sapphire's were under £240 - how much is a GX2?

Can be had for about £280 new now. If you're prepared to buy one second hand it's a good option if you don't have the right motherboard that the 4850s demand. I bought one for £235 second hand. You also got a good deal as I can't find them that cheap anywhere :p

Ok, with the card still at 700_2100, no AA and no AF at 1680 x 1050, high settings, I got the following;

Min fps - 23.19
Max fps - 59.24
Avg fps - 48.34

Unfortunately, I never recorded any 8800GT results at that res as I didn't have the monitor I have now.

I just ran one at the same settings Tooks on my 512mb 8800gts with the new drivers.

Average FPS: 32.47
Min FPS: 23.92
Max FPS: 40.37

CPU at 3.4ghz, so a pretty respectable increase for anyone with a 512mb card, im going to go for the 4870 or 4870x2 myself.

Thanks for that, good to see what folks are getting with the various GPU's.

The 4870 should be a beast I reckon!

My HD4850 overclocked to 700_2100 again at 1440 x 900 and with everything on high settings manages the following scores;

Min fps - 31.14
Max fps - 58.37
Avg fps - 47.74

31 fps minimum at that res? thats actually playable, and a good speed.. i could live with a 31fps minimum

thats over double what you were getting with SLi.

I could believe 2 of those in xfire would make it totally smooth, shame that multi gpu's seem to hardly affect the game.

you can imagine i suppose a 4870 would net you 35fps minimum

just benched 1280x1024 high.... GPU @ 690/1100, E6750 @ 3.64ghz

what are the fan profiles like on these cards? hope they're not like the 3850 where the fan barely speeds up even under full load? :p

Anyway so far I compiled about 1 hour's worth of stats from Fraps in CoD4 on both my 3850 and 4850 using identical settings

1680x1050, CCC set to max quality, manually selected 2x AA, AF set to app preference and AF slider in CoD4 all the way up

I've got the settings at 8xAA 16xAF now and will start recording statistics for another hour total.

Ok I've played for another hour at 8xAA 16xAF and these are my results:

Time-------Min-------Max------Avg.
61.9-------35.00-----242.00---93.00

So it looks like going from 2x to 8xAA and 16xAF only had about a 5% performance hit

they are worse! It seems to be permanently stuck at 14%!! If there is not a bios fix or something soon I may return it under the distance selling act and get a 4870.

I doubt they have meant for that, or they'll leave it at that for too long because in some hot rooms I'd imagine the cards temperature could pass 100c, maybe up to 110c if the reports of 95c in a 22c ambient room is anything to go from.

One we can ramp the fan up I'd imagine it to be similar to the 2900 XT fan - extremely good at cooling but sounds like you have a vacuum in yer computer :)

I can't quite get my head round some figures I've just generated using the Crysis GPU Benchmark Application. If they are correct, then this HD4850 is amazing...

I'd just run 3dmark06 at default and achieved 14512 marks, barely any more than my overclocked 8800GT managed. Never mind I thought, try the games and see how they go.

Basically, my old 8800GT (512MB) at 1440 x 900 with a quad at 3ghz, running for 4 loops with everything set to high achieved the following scores;

Min fps - 8.94
Max fps - 28.4
Avg fps - 24.15

Did these figures not look low to anyone?

I have just ran the bench on 3 loops, 1680x1050, no AA, all settings on high, and i get the following:

Min fps - 12.4
Max fps - 37.65
Avg fps - 32.145

Then again at 1900x1200, no AA, all settings on High:

Min fps - 12.78
Max fps - 29.90
Avg fps - 26.07

XP DX9 with spec as sig. Surely Tooks rig should have beat mine comfortably, especially with a quad at 3GHz

Just trying to decide whether the new ATI card is worth the upgrade from the GT.

this doesn't look like such a Crysis killer yet...

Gurusan, what did you do to your old, super-superclocked 3850?

it's still chilling here. I flashed it to 777/2000 and removed all the pencil shading....Going to put the stock cooler back on and put it up for sale I guess...

Just trying to decide whetehr the new ATI card is worth the upgrade from the GT. Could someone do a quick test on 1680X1050, High, No AA for me?

They seem like very good results. I don't know if it would make much difference, but the old results I obtained were on the pre-patched version of crysis. My HD4850 results are on version 1.2?

On my own setup, I'm definately seeing gains. This was after my initial 3dmark06 results disappointment where I was wondering what all the fuss was about!

I can't remember what drivers I was using with those 8800GT results either.
