Tonights boxing - Khan vs Gomez

Not giving much back but was still defending himself and still landing punches.
After dropping to his knees earlier that round it suggests to me that the guy had no problems in calling it quits if he wanted to.

Also, count aloud how long it takes Gomez to protest after the ref calls it, what is that, less than a second?

So what it doesnt matter how long it takes him to protest, he was getting absolutely hammered kahn was pushing all the time, he'd suffered enough damage as it was.

agree there.

He'd been knocked down twice and was walking relentlessly walking onto the end of Kahn's punches, his face was a real mess.. the combinations that Kahn put on him in the last few seconds was enough imo..

He didn't suffer enough damage, he was happy to carry on.

If he had he would have been knocked out and unable to carry on.

I could see Kahn going on to win it at the end, he was battering Gomez. Ref stopped it way to early though I felt Gomez, although being punched around the ring, still had enough where-abouts to get a lucky punch and could've lasted another 20-30s atleast until the end of the round. Should've been stopped if he was still being heavilly battered in the 6th if you ask me.

Great fight though, hardest I've seen Kahn working.

The key thing is that Kahn is only 21, he has a lot of time to learn and peak...

he fights bloody well at this stage in his career, and he deserves all the support he can get

In time he will fight big names,

but people need to be realistic and realise its all about money.

He wont just fight the main title fighters right away, theres a lot of cash to be made en route

Stupidly rich that lads gonna be.

Yep, thats the thing, its in both the interest of the fighter and the promoter to take on as many fights as possible, whilst still holding the interest and coverage while on the way to the title fights.

we can all say things like *just wait until he fights a real world class fighter* and whatnot, a lot of people say these things in similar fights..

but if you are realistic, you realise its a career, its a case of earning as much as possible at each step from bottom to top.

going from a low level to the top level, to just prove something, is a stupid risk to take

Great post and blatantly obvious. However, when people say that they just want to see him get his arse whooped and spice up his perfect record.

I think it's more a case of people wanting to see a steady improvement in the level of opposition he's facing rather than the cherry picked human punch bags Warren keeps handing him on a plate.

Khan is a shocking fighter.

Until he stops fighting hand picked fighters that are either to inexperienced or are past it everyone will have misconceived ideas on how good he is.

As soon as he comes up against someone decent, he's going to get K.O'd, simple as that!
I wouldn't call him a shocking fighter. He's clearly a league above every one of his opponents so far, but up to now they've all been european level fighters (at best).

The problem Kahn has is that he hasn't got a great defence, and appears to have a pretty weak chin. Not much he can do about having a weak chin, so unless his defence is improved drastically, he will be exposed once he hits world level.

Willie Limond was much closer to putting Kahn away than Gomez tonight, would only have taken a slightly better fighter to finish him:

Id love to see that too, infact tonight i was saying to my mate while watching the fight that its nice to see Kahn feel some pain from the body shot, its part of his experience progressing to the top.

We would all feel slightly satisfied by seeing kahn getting a whooping, but really we need to rate him as a great young aspiring british fighter. And with a bit of luck, when his career hits its peak, he will be a pretty much unbeatable world champion.

Theres a huge amount of money to be made for both the boxer and the promoter in this game, we really cant expect him to get his ass handed to him by a true pro for a while yet... unless someone gets underestimated of course :)

The ref was spot on in stopping it.

Gomez was taking way too many power shots. Khan needs to box from the outside where he could easily pick his opponents off. Maybe not as exciting but would get the job done which is how Mayweather got through them all.

The biggest reason peoples patience with Khan is wearing thin is because of Audley Harrison.

Both Olympic medallists, both headlining bills against bums when they should be working in their way up on undercards, both overhyped to hell.

In reality the difference is Audley was in his thirties before he even got going as a pro so didn't have time on his side to be fighting 20 punchbags before he even got a sniff of decent domestic fighters. Plus he was promising he was going to do this and that even though you knew he wasn't up to world level.

Amir does have the time on his side to build up slowly but he seems to believe in all the hype Warren, ITV and co have built up and so is promising all the same things Audley did whilst showing nothing like the ability required to fulfil them at this point.

Just got back from watching this live, great night out and thats coming from someone who is indifferent to boxing, great atomsphere, even for the amatuer stuff at the beginning, some real passionate supporters amongst the crowd.

Anyway I gotta say, Gomez (who turned out to be a Irish lad when i thought he was a mexican:p) could take a serious beating, the ref didnt have to stop it, but he did right, otherwise Gomez would have taken this to the 8-9th round easy imo.

Oh and the level of crumpet at Boxing games is simply unbelievable, wow :p

Actually Audley may well have been up to world class fighting, but he was never pushed hard, and never given the chance. When he threw combo's , which was incredibly rare, he looks VERY very good, as in, some of the nicest boxing you'll see. HE really had got a nice way of fighting and a decent build when he's in shape.

Age was definately against him which is why he really had to be pushing on hard, and fast, and you're right in that Khan can afford that, however that doesn't mean he should. What if he gets a cut in the next fight above the eye which never heals right.

Audley was in a bad car crash, i always forget the full story but didn't his brother get badly injured or died, and he got a pretty serious chest injury so was out for a long time and thats all pretty hard and thats why he's been gone again. When he had that fight several months ago, he actually looked in pretty fantastic shape especially for the age and coming back from serious injury. He unfortunately was up against a bum, a complete bum, and was just trying to get the ring rust off and some rounds so never ever really tried. He threw one combo though near the end that showed he has that spark still and I still think he could put in some surprise fights, though age/time getting any big fights or a real title is ridiculously unlikely. I do wonder if he'd been pushed hard and fast after the Olympics if he couldn't have been world title contended, especially with the current crop competiting for it.

But like I said, Khan could get injured and out of the game in any fight. Not sure if he did break a rib tonight, but a , honestly, crap fighting out of nowhere almost downed him. He needs to push on , and up and not get complacent like other fighters the promoter works with. He's there to milk the money and doesn't give a monkeys if Khan becomes champion, thats just an added benefit. 30 sell out poor fights with a easy income and little chance to lose, is better than 5 fights, a championship attempt and failure and career over. Nothing from his fights suggests he's going to be world class so far. Fast hands with no defense, when he meets someone equally as fast with counter punching he'll be down within a round.

I swear promoters are ruining progress of good fighters so they don't peak to soon, which makes it so boring.

This is a fight I would love to see but sadly won't happen, he would get absolutely torn to shreds against Pacquiao.

Also, bear in mind most these fighters that are hand picked for him are actually featherweights who move up to lightweight, hence why he always appears bigger then all his opponents.

He is quick and he has stamina but he's one of the most over hyped overrated boxers out there and it will be a very long time before he earns respect as a boxer. At the moment he is average at best. Can't really blame him though I mean he can only fight what's put in front of him by Frank Warren and as said there is far too much money to be made.
