A bit of longer term thinking here.
In the next couple of years my in-laws will no longer be driving, and as they do so much for us, it will be down to use to be the taxi for them (not a complaint).

So the likelihood is that they will sell both their cars, and chip in with me to buy something that we can all fit in. As I'm always the family taxi, this puts me in the 7 seater category, which is a market I know nothing about.

I've always loathed MPV's which is why I know little about them. I'm not a fan of pseudo off roaders, I think if it's 4wd and non sports, it should come from the factory fitted with 2 inches of cow crap, and should be capable of driving over WW2 battlefields!

So, the brief: (being aware that this will be in a couple of years, but spec it for now as a guide)

Under £15k
7 full seats
Sensible mileage (doesn't need to be very low)
Comfortable
Not too high (geriatric parents need to be able to get in)

I can't see this doing more than 10k miles a year, as I'll switch to the bike for day to day commuting, and leave the car for weekends or evening shopping etc. This means running costs aren't a massive factor, but I'd still like them to be reasonable.

Feel free to suggest things that are outside of my price range currently if you think they will be a decent used option in the near future. It will give me something to look at.

Cheers

TBH £15k is nearly twice the budget I had to play with so never really looked at stuff in that kind of price range. However, this is a good excuse to post a picture of my family chariot again:

Loads of toys, loads of room, very comfortable and smooth ride, decent perfomance and handling considering the size and weight of the thing. Interior is typically jap in that it's well screwed together and everything is where you need it but it's quite plasticky and well........ japanese :o

It's pretty juicy round town (averaging around 25mpg), but on a run it's not too bad, probably stretching to around 30-35mpg.

But, like I said above, it cost me just over £8k, therefore in a different budget bracket to stuff you'll be looking at. If I had £15k to spend on an MPV I honestly don't know where my money would go either...

Have a look at the forgotten Honda Stream, 7 seats and it does not look like a people carrier

Lol what does it look like then!

A mate had a Chrysler grand Voyager, seemed to do the MPV things well, drank fuel tho, but its a proper full size MPV with a excellent boot.

Aren't they dangerous? I seem to remember they failed the safety tests miserably and considering it's a people mover, I presume safety is high on the list.

I drove a VW Touran when I was on holiday.
The 2.0 TDI had a bit of poke but was a pretty bland interior and with all 7 seats in use, there was virtually no boot. Plenty of leg room in all seats though.

yes, they fail miserably in crash tests
they're also full of cheap nasty plastics..

borrowed a grand voyager a few years back to move some stuff, and it was vast. handled like a boat though

Bear in mind here that Scenics / S-Max / Zafira etc.. all have the 6th and 7th seat as only suitable for children under about 10.

If you want a true 7 seater, you're looking at new Shape Renault Espace, Peugeot 807, Chrysler Grand Voyager or for the Jap Options Toyota Previa / Estima (jap import, same as previa but JDM)

Me and wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law, daughter, plus we normally have one or two other people when we go out who don't drive.

You dont buy a MPV for Handling tho do you, i hadnt realised they were so poor in the crash tests tho.

How about the V class Merc's, basically a van with seats, but they do look nice inside.

Seat alhambra in black with tinted rear windows, it looks a hell of a lot nicer than the usual people carriers.
Not mine but the missus wants to get one of these should we need to change the leon cupra for a larger family wagon.

That looks extremely similar to all other people carriers, and those wheels do not belong on it. Yuck.

Made in the same factory as the Ford and VW versions (sharran and Galaxy). The wheels are god awful and are not standard I agree.
However the Seat model is a little cheaper using the same materials, second hand prices are more affordable and to be honest I think it looks better with the Seat grill rather than the vw or Ford.
