First "real" HD4870 benchies @ HKEPC

TYPICAL SOUND LEVELS

Rustling leaves 10 dBA Barely audible
Broadcast studio 20 dBA
Bedroom at night 30 dBA Quiet
Living room 40 dBA
Office, classroom 50 dBA Moderate
Normal conversation (3 feet) 60 dBA
Automobile interior 70 dBA Noisy
Urban street 80 dBA
Heavy truck (50 feet) 90 dBA Very noisy
Shout (5 feet) 100 dBA
Construction Site 110 dBA Intolerable
Jet takeoff (200 feet) 120 dBA
2900xt 140 dBA

:p

We start up a benchmark and leave it running for a while. The fan rotational speed remains constant. We take the dBA meter, move away 75 CM and then aim the device at the active fan on the graphics card.

Both [4850] Powercolor and Force3D obviously have the same thermals and noise levels, as the cards are identical, though hearable it's not bad though. Expect roughly 43 DBa when the GPU is fully stressed

3dmark06 is 11513 which is the same as my 2900xt overclocked by 10% gets..

not again, i think he's learnt his drunken lesson and sobered up. even being away one day is a lot, i was a away for a week last week, trust me its hard, sober or not LOL

That 140 dBA for the 2900 XT was at idle. :D

Lol!

To this day I don't understand why people called it a loud card. Yes it was a little noisy, but I went from a X1950XT to one and it was actually quieter at idle. That being said, the second I found the 100% option in ATiTool i realised how powerful the fan was, but even then it pushed a tonne of air.

My 2900XT had enough power in the fan to get my PC into orbit!

Very true - but isnt it also true that in a previous generation it has been the opposite, with ATI improving its drivers dramatically?

No gaurentee this time, of course, but hopefully possible - either way for the price I cant see how anyone can argue and for anyone with interest in multi channel audio decoding there isnt any choice anyway (as nv can only do stereo):D

Both very valid points. Basically, as with every other generation of cards, we are going to have to wait untill both sets of cards have been released and both sets of drivers have matured enough to see which card actually does have the most grunt..

Saying that, the ATI's are, and as have been several times in the past, going to be the best bang for buck.. i mean the early results for the 4850 are awesome for a £120 card...

(I'm an nvidia fanboy by the way.. so no one can call me biased based on the above comment =D)

Ok in that review it does amazing in cod4 but thats down to its ease of AA, I dont use AA but still it is impressive. Is cod4 a dx10.1 game?

The crysis one they did on medium for some stupid reason so I'll have to wait for someone to submit a result to your thread. It doesnt look quite so impressive a result at first glance

old benchs arent so irrelevant to people who play old games, like me

CoD4 isn't DX10.1, I believe the only widely known game that supported it was Assasin's Creed, but a few bucks from nVidia's way got that taken out due to a performance "bug" affecting DX10.1 cards (in the order of 20%).

if you play old games, then your 2900xt should be plenty enough already?

and surely the fact these new cards are kicking ass with new games @ high res with AA applied automatically mean you'll get a decent performance boost with old games too?

I would love it if there was a psychas > English translator that worked half as well as that one does.
