1 Game hindering sales of All others?

a large proportion of WoW players i ahve met do only play WoW, and dont look at anything else. This is not because its better etc or that their PC's dont run it or anything like that. It is purely due to the fact that WoW is an easy game to play and isn't like a normal "PC Game".

Loads of WoW players have never/rarely played PC games before and as such still dont as they find FPS's require too much skill/twitching and RTS's are too complicated, as they are casual gamers and dont want to "lose" that many times at something which is meant to be "fun"

lol, you're making WoW sound like some brain dead retards game. It's challenging if you want it to be, but you can just sit back and enjoy it if you want also, that's again part of the appeal, it's so flexible.

Seriously doubt most people are simply playing WoW and not looking at other games because they find it easy. Really that's just complete rubbish.

I'm just not buying it. I don't believe anyone simply plays WoW and then never looks at another game again until they stop playing. Also consider most people have a console which provides other types of games, so why would they go looking for those types of games on the PC? Consoles have more of these types of games, and frankly better ones, plus you don't need to spend ridiculous amounts of money to run the games.

And at the end of the day, if WoW is infact hindering the sales of other games on the PC, it's because it's a better game with more appeal to the gaming population. If you make a better game than WoW that's accessible and that people want to play then they WILL be drawn away from WoW, end of. It's not like they're sat in their houses not reading any news or watching TV...etc, entirely blocking any outside sources of information so they don't hear about any new games ever again. WoW isn't really to blame here, the blame is on the developers of other games, because their games clearly aren't appealing to people enough to draw them away from WoW. It's their failure and the blame is on them. You've got to adapt to the market and engineer your games to appeal to the population and what they want in a game. Clearly they're just failing to do that.

I think games like WoW do have an effect on how many people are playing other games, in the short term often pulling people away from other games, but they do also after a time have the affect of getting more people involved in playing other games.

WoW (along with about every other mmorpg out there) has been predicted as being a killer of games like UO prior to release, but in the end they've tended to pull in more new players, rather than canabalising the existing games player base - MMORPG's tend to be rather sociable games so in my experience have a tendency to be played by people who are already interested in that specific game type, or who have friends playing it.

I don't think long term the likes of WoW are going to really hurt the gaming market, as they do tend to draw in new players.

IIRC WoW has something like 10 million accounts, but i'm not sure how they count it, by accounts created - including those that have been dormant for years or banned (no income), up to date with payments but not played, or actually played at the moment.

And loads of PC gamers like me who do know what we are doing have settled into WoW because there is nothing else I deem worthy of my time.

Im sure their pc's are as out of date as the game is and wouldnt run any newer games anyway.

Hardware purchases are software driven. I have an oldish PC but haven't upgraded it because there is no software worth buying to make a hardware upgrade necessary. If I see a killer title tomorrow then there are thousands in the bank for a new rig.

I know it sounds silly, but from personal experience, when i was hooked on WoW, i played nothing else. When i did read about a game that was hailed as being great.. Ie, the witcher, bioshock etc. I totally ignored them

I know this is kinda steering away from the point you was making.... but i hated the witcher i found the gameplay shockingly bad. Thats just my opinion. I payed a tenner for it and i can sadly say thats a tenner I will never see again :(

As for all those that say WoW damages peoples social life etc. I come to you with a quote from WoW "Take all things into moderation, including World of Warcraft"
Learn to time manage basically :D its really not that hard

I actually find it quite shocking the number of people who play WoW beyond the point of enjoyment, many seem to log in simply for the sake of it and can't even explain why. I played, eventually got bored so stopped.

WoW definitely seems to be the kind of game that you play to the exclusion of other games.

Personally I think its the design model thats to "Blame".

Non-MMO games "end", the interest fades and players look for new games. Wow does not end If you are an active subscription holder, you are effectively spending the cost of a new game every 3 months - Money that might have otherwise been spent on something new.

Or spent on better computer components. Wow doesn't have very high hardware requirement so most modern games may be beyond those wishing to play others.

I would go with the "playing wow to the exclusion of all others" though. I know I did this when I played. If you got a few hours you would prefer to advance a 'persistant' character rather than just go through a story.

I've been through quite a few MMOs, and subscribed to two at the moment (EVE and AoC), but still play many other games such as CSS, Crysis, BF series, GRID, TF2, SC, Sins of a solar empires, etc.

I don't really get addicted to MMOs for long, so I'm always looking for new games to play! Although I'll always make sure it is a quality game before I go out and buy it.

For me, the biggest problem with pc gaming, and the biggest threat to pc game sales is the lack of quality thats been produced.

When I was playing wow, I still spent the time to look at new games, play them, evaluate them. Nothing grabbed me because so little quality has come out in recent years.

If Lucasarts announced that a new Monkey Island adventure was going on sale tomorrow, and they'd learnt from the mistakes of MI4 and were going back to the point and click aspect of the originals, I'd leave work early to get my hands on a copy.

I know some people who still buy new games, but generally these are really casual players. I've never met anyone in a raiding guild who plays anything else at the same time.

Hi there :D

You have just met one.

To me, most of the current crop of games arent really that good. The witcher was quite poor in my eyes (as an example). However, my whole guild managed to fit in some CoD4 multiplayer between raids. I still play LFS and TTDX when I dont feel like logging on to WoW.

And Im not the only one, there are times on TS that just disolve into what games people have played (other than WoW). You would be surprised to hear that for a raiding guild, people have time to go out (get drunk and post random pictures on our forums or come on TS and abuse those on there), live their lives or even play other games.

Quite true a few games have been out and about but yea generally not great. Mass effect I found really good, Portal was flipping excellent ! just to name a few

Basically i feel if there was more games like Portal the world would be a happier place :D

Edit - Spelling Correction
Edit2 - The cake is a lie

I haven't bought a PC game since I bought WoW. I've not upgraded my PC either. I used to buy a couple of games a month.

Haven't even bought the new C&C and I love that series, but I'd never play it so there is no point.
