*** ATI RADEON 4850 IN STOCK! ***

For the HD 4870

$300 + VAT = $352.5 ~ £179

Thats the minimum price we can expect. Is it really worth it for 20-30% more performance? 50% more expensive.

The USA RRP for the 4850 is US$200. That would be UK£101. OcUK prices start at £138.64, which is US$273.63.

US$300 is UK£152

So we can expect the 4870 to start at OcUK at around ((273.63/200)*152) = £208, for stock models.

Stuff is usually more expensive in the UK than USA price +VAT.

I'm tempted by a 4850. A lot of grunt for midrange. I'll wait to see what happens with 9800GTX pricing, though, and to see whether the 1GB version of the 4850 is worth the extra. I'm in no hurry to upgrade, so I can give things a couple of weeks to settle down and look at how overclocking tends to work out on the new midrange.

I understand that and thats why I said minimum price we can expect. But over time UK prices do end up at US price + VAT. In fact the 4850 here in the UK was sold at US MSRP + VAT by some retailers. So I basically just named the price the card will settle at.

It has to converge otherwise its easy profit as I could go to Hong Kong (or wherever) buy a lot of 1000, pay the VAT, and then sell it in the UK (obviously I dont have the links to do that). There are transportation costs, but the US still seem to transport them from Asia without adding much to the price, how hard could it be for the UK which is closer. Why do we pay more in the UK? A less competitive environment at first. Its why we pay more for everything in the UK, its more difficult for the consumer simply to purchase stuff from europe, or asia even though its very easy for a business.

As for the person above claiming import taxes, there arent any for graphics cards.

m8, dont forget we have to pay import and VAT ontop of the $ to £ conversion

It appears that you've rushed your reply, as it isn't relevant to my post. If I had written that the UK selling price should be £100, your reply would have been relevant. I didn't.

I'll explain, just in case. I didn't think it was necessary before.

The USA RRPs for the 4850 and 4870 are known - $200 and $300.

The UK RRPs are not known and might or might not be the actual selling price anyway.

The actual UK selling price of 4850s is known.

Given those facts, it is possible to make an assumption in order to arrive at a probable actual UK selling price for a 4870.

The assumption is that the ratio of the actual UK selling price to the USA RRP will be the same for the 4870 as it is for the 4850.

4850 supports 8-channel LPCM output over HDMI, but not TrueHD/DTS-HD MA, the only solution to that is if you wait for the new Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 Sound Card which does support HDMI 1.3a

Thanks - I'm getting an Onkyo 606 sometime this week or next. I was hoping I could use bitstream with TrueHD/DTS-HD MA but I guess will wait till the next-next-next gen cards. Do we know anything about the LPCM? Could it do 192/24? Then maybe it would be the same except the card decoding it? I've read about LPCM but it still don't make any sense to me.

I 've just cancelled the gtx260 order for that gf card.

wont be buying from ocuk at that price. US price is £101 but they dont have sales tax so add £17 and you have the actual price. there is no duty.

Who said the UK price should be £101?

£101+£17 = £118. The actual price is £138. Which is not £118.

Still want to see before commiting to either the 50 or 70 A) if the 4850 is able to overclock to at least 4870 levels B) How much affect the GDDR5 has on performance C) How the 9800gtx+ turns out given the insane cheapness now thanks to ATI :) (I doubt I will buy one of those but worth not ruling out).

Matthew

well so far all 4850s I've heard of can do 700mhz, that's 50mhz off from the 4870 cards...once some decent ocing software is released we'll see how much farther it can go.

I'm also curious how much of a difference gDDR5 makes.

As regards 4850's pricing OCUK appear to be 10-15 ponds more expensive than other suppliers atm.
Any ideas as to why?

pls can someone say for deffo if the 4850 works fine with pci 1.0a am waiting for answer so can order :( is it okay plssss
