Does it work, or is the article also contradicting itself?

FOUND THIS

****NOT WORTH WHILE UNLESS YOU ARE GOING FOR 50% OR HIGHER****

if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive( make sure clock and memory settings are correct). You can then go to the file "C:\Users\Bretware\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Bretware. XML. the xml file will have the same name as the catalyst profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="65" />

Change the value to "manual" and Want value to "65"

Save the file then reload your profile in catalyst.

65% seemed perfect for me, 70% was loud but you may need it if your case has poor air flow.

You will have to select the profile everytime you start the computer, but it will work until there is a fix or better info so i can figure how to change the auto target temp.
Good Luck ,bretware

I found the profile here

While they say it voids the warranty, my personal opinion behind that is to just cover them selves if a noob breaks a graphics card because they've fitted the heatsink badly and ended up cracking the core.

If you put a new heatsink on, but the card dies of other reasons, then it's not immoral to put the old heatsink back on and RMA it as it's not user error, or a fault that has occurred due to the heatsink being changed.

As far as I know, most manufacturers and retailers are pretty lax on this anyway.

When I bought a 9800XT along with an arctic cooling HSF (that one everyone was getting), I rang up OC because I thought it needed to be RMAd, they were willing to accept it back, but told me to just make sure I put the stock heatsink back on before I sent it in.

I never did send it in as I figured out the problem afterward anyway.

not just that, but imagine an oc with the temps like that too! *puts on tin foil hat * I can see why people are thinking ati have stuck it at 14% so it doesn't drown the sales of the 4870.

It's gotta hit 800core *surely* with those temps :cool:

Well I'm getting one of these tomorrow, bought a 9800GTX from the MM and found it doesn't fit in my case lol. Fortunately the 4850 is a shorty :)

Apparently anything that fits the 3850 will fit the 4850, but I want someone else to report back in detail before I do it. :)

How did ATI manage to make a cooler THAT bad?

That's with the stock cooler at 14% I believe (found the source of the chart but no idea if I can link to it as this forum seems funny about these things).
