first 4870 review

Is that the old lost planet or the new Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition which is ment to run better.

No idea m8, ask the chinese dude that did the review :P LP has always run quiet badly on ATI hardware though, not because the hardware is bad, quiet the opposite as can be seen, its just that Capcom have few, if any optimizations in place for ATI hardware, not like its a popular game anyway.

The benchies were done with a 512Mb version of the 4870 card. There are supposed to be 1Gb versions available too (well there had better be!). Wonder how these will fair against the 280 at higher resolutions.

I'm interested to know that as well. I'm wondering if the extra mem will give a decent improvement for the price, or will the extra cost push it towards the X2 price with no major benefit?

Where's the chessy puns? :p

A Chess Player is walking from the lake carrying two fish in a bucket. He is approached by the Game Warden who asks him for his fishing license. The Chess player says to the warden, "I did not catch these fish, they are my pets's pawn. Everyday I come down to the water and whistle and these fish jump out and I take around to see the sights only to return them at the end of the day; remember that the Chess Board is like an ocean; full of fish". The warden, does not play chess, he not had any idea what he's taking about; not believing him, reminds him that it is illegal to fish without a license. The Chess Player turns to the warden and says,
"CHECK" "If you don't believe me then watch," as he throws the fish back into the water. The warden says, "Now whistle to your fish and show me that they will come out of the water." The Chess Player turns to the warden and says, "What fish!?"

:(

it sure is if you only have one pcie slot!

and not all want crossfire, as good as it is - ppl have lots of considerations such as their current setup.

True but if it comes down to a 4870 for £200 which gives 90% (or even 100% in some games) of the performance of the GTX280 for £400 I know which one I would have even single slot.

Plus with the money saved you can put a nice watercooled loop on it and overclock the ******** off it.

Just my 2p worth :D

no it is the case - if your building a system, consider all the options available to you.

If your upgrading then your options are thus limited.

ERGO : a single fast card is the way to move forward for those people :D

Do you really think that the masses want the fastest regardless of price? You are talking about a small percentage of the market, and I thus say that ATi have got their pricing strategy right, and given where they are placed against Nvidia's cards, will outsell them.

I do not know one person who buys the fastest regardless of price in reality, and these are people who could easily go out and buy 1 (or 3) GTX 280s etc.

Very impressive and about time. Nice one ATI!

Pretty much guaranteed Nvidia will drop the price of the 280/260 if they want to compete.

I suspect we will see a 280 around £300 and the 260 around £200 pretty soon.

I have just had confirmation that the 4870 is going to be in stock within the week so the nvidia price drop is going to have to happen ASAP and some people who bought a GTX260 or 280 are going to be seriously sour faced because IIRC many folks said it will take some months for the GTX 280 price to drop since the 8800GTX was so high priced for so long.

Neat!

Those temps look high, 92 degrees under load, 79 idle, aftermarket cooler required I would say ;)

Wish I understood how sites come up with such bizarre power consumption figures, I'm sure they're including the monitor or something. They've got HD 3870 using 161 W idle / 282 W load when from all the numbers I've looked at it uses less than my 8800 GT, and my system uses 99 W idle / 190 W load.
